Kernels, Cubs Will Play For MWL’s Western Division Title, Starting Tuesday

Cedar Rapids, IA – The Kernels lacked the timely hitting they needed in their final regular season game of 2022. Cedar Rapids scattered six hits over the course of nine innings and fell to the South Bend Cubs 9-2 at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Stadium in Cedar Rapids Sunday

*Cedar Rapids, IA – *The Kernels lacked the timely hitting they needed in their final regular season game of 2022. Cedar Rapids scattered six hits over the course of nine innings and fell to the South Bend Cubs 9-2 at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Stadium in Cedar Rapids Sunday afternoon.

The Kernels scored both of their runs in the fourth inning, when they tied the game at 2-2. Jefferson Morales connected for a two-out single and Dylan Neuse walked. Then, Jake Rucker plated both runners with a double to right-center field.

South Bend broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning. The Cubs also plated single runs in each of the last three innings.

Kyler Fedko had a solid day at the plate, going 3-for-4, all singles. Brooks Lee also walked three times.

The Kernels won their season series against South Bend, 7-4. Both teams finished the regular season with identical overall records (73-58). Next, they square off for the Midwest League’s Western Division championship, starting Tuesday at Four Winds Field in South Bend, Indiana.

First-half champion Cedar Rapids will host game two of the best-of-three series on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. If necessary, the third and deciding game be played Friday night, also at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Stadium in Cedar Rapids. Playoff tickets are on sale now through the Kernels’ ticket office.
