KERNELS TAKE WIN FIRST GAME OF FINAL REGULAR-SEASON HOME STAND

*Cedar Rapids, IA – *In a playoff preview series, Cedar Rapids started off its final home stand of the season with a victory.

The Kernels sent nine batters to plate and six runs off three hits in the bottom of the eighth inning, as they defeated the South Bend Cubs 8-6 Kernels at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Stadium Tuesday night. Leading 2-1 to start the frame, Cedar Rapids got a two-run double from Willie Joe Garry, Jr., a two-run single by Dylan Neuse and a two-run home run from Jake Rucker on consecutive hits.

Rucker’s blast, which bounced off the upper part of the left field seating area, was his sixth home run of the season and gave the Kernels a decisive 8-1 advantage going into the ninth inning.

Starting pitcher Orlando Rodriguez (4-1) earned the victory for Cedar Rapids. He threw 6.0 innings and faced just 23 batters, while allowed three hits and one run (earned) with four strike outs and one walk.

The game was the first of eight-straight the Kernels and Cubs will play against each other over the next two weeks. Cedar Rapids hosts South Bend for the final five games of the regular season, before squaring off in a best-of-three division playoff series starting Sept. 13th.

Game two of the series is tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. David Festa (7-3, 2.59 ERA) is scheduled to start the game for Cedar Rapids, against the Cubs’ Luis Devers (4-0, 0.96 ERA).
