Late heroics spark 4-3 Kernels win in finale

Cedar Rapids, IA – Cedar Rapids plated three unanswered in the sixth and seventh innings to steal a 4-3 win from the Beloit Sky Carp on Sunday afternoon in the series finale. Will Holland launched a game-tying solo homer before Alerick Soularie provided the go-ahead RBI on double in the seventh inning. Soularie, Aaron Sabato and Kyler Fedko each had multi-hit afternoons to fuel the lineup. Cedar Rapids improves to 61-41, 18-18 in the second half.

Sabato opened the scoring for Cedar Rapids in the first as he clobbered his 17th home run of the season out to left-center.

Ryan Shreve threw extremely well while opening a staff day, striking out four over 3.0 scoreless. Beloit would draw even with a run in the fifth, then added two more in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead.

Cedar Rapids began their comeback effort in the sixth as Fedko laced an RBI single through the left side, plating Soularie to make it 3-2.

Brad Hanner took over in the sixth inning and escaped a bases-loaded jam, proceeding to fire 2.1 scoreless innings and strike out five while retiring seven of eight batters faced to earn the win in relief.

Down a run after the stretch, Holland blasted a solo home run over the Plumbers & Pipefitters Pavilion in left field to tie things at three. Willie Joe Garry Jr. followed by reaching on a hit-by-pitch, scoring all the way from first two batters later on Soularie’s double rocketed down the left field line.

Derek Molina allowed the first two batters to reach in the ninth then bore down to secure his fifth save with a strikeout and a ground-ball double play.

The Kernels are idle on Monday before beginning a six-game series with Quad Cities on Tuesday evening at 6:08 p.m. CT at the Field of Dreams Stadium in Dyersville, Iowa before playing the final five games of the set in Davenport.
