Fredericksburg, VA - The Fredericksburg Nationals walked a season high 20 in a 18-7 loss to the Delmarva Shorebirds.

It was a solid start to the game before things went south. RHP Marlon De la Cruz threw a scoreless three innings to get the game going, with four strikeouts through the first third of the game. Heading into the middle innings, the FredNats had a 1-0 lead off a Cristhian Vaquero RBI infield single. In the 4th, thats when things started to unravel.

The FredNats were just inches away from getting the third out in the top of the 4th, but a ball just clipped the glove of the first baseman Juan Cruz. Two scored on that play, a DJ Layton single to give the Shorebirds the lead, and they never looked back. Delmarva added on four more against De La Cruz, who exited with six earned runs against him, and his team down 6-1.

Things went from bad to worse as the game went on. In the top of the 6th, the Shorebirds scored six runs on just one hit. In the 8th, Delmarva scored four runs on one more hit to go ahead 16-3.

With the loss, the FredNats drop their first game of the series after winning back to back to start the week. They’ll look to get back into the win column tomorrow with RHP Alexander Meckley starting against RHP Jake Dykhoff. First pitch from Virginia Credit Union Stadium is set for 6:35 PM.
