FREDERICKSBURG, VA - FredNat starting pitcher Luke Young was named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for the week of August 29-September 3, Major League Baseball Announced today. Young becomes the first FredNat pitcher to win the award this year, and the fourth FredNat to win a weekly award in the past six weeks.

Young turned in the best start of the season for the FredNats on Saturday night in a win against the Lynchburg Hillcats, pitching seven innings of one-run ball (the run was unearned) with nine strikeouts. The start was the longest of the year for any FredNat pitcher.

Young, the 21-year-old from San Angelo, TX and the Nationals' 11th round draft pick in 2022 from Midland Junior College, has been the most consistent pitcher for the FredNats in the second half of the season.

The FredNats have won eight straight games that Young has started, and in his last two starts, he has 19 strikeouts and just three walks. Young has not lost a start since July 18 at Augusta, and in 24 innings pitched in the month of August, he allowed just 10 runs for an ERA of 3.75.

Young and the FredNats will try to make a last-second effort to come back in the Carolina League North Division heading into the final week of the 2023 regular season. The team is 4.5 games out of first place with seven games to play, and the elimination number from the playoffs is three.

The FredNats will travel to Salisbury, MD to take on the Delmarva Shorebirds in the final series of the season, which begins on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
