Riders pitching strong again in shutout win

FRISCO, Texas (July 1, 2022) – Carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning, the Frisco RoughRiders earned their fifth shutout victory of the season Friday night with a 5-0 win over the Corpus Christi Hooks. Frisco starter Owen White (2-0) threw 5.1 innings of hitless baseball as he surrendered one walk and struck out seven batters.
Riders center fielder J.P. Martinez knocked his ninth home run of the season in the fourth inning in the Friday win. Shortstop Jonathan Ornelas finished 3-for-5 at the plate in his 30th multi-hit outing of the season and his 14th three-hit game. Ornelas leads all active Texas League hitters with the most hits (92) and best batting average (.335) this year.
Frisco raced out to an early lead on Hooks starter Adrian Chaidez (2-1) in the bottom of the fourth inning, beginning with five consecutive hits. Ornelas singled to begin the inning before Martinez vaulted his ninth long ball of the year into the Lazy River in right field. Blaine Crim and Justin Foscue both singled, allowing Kellen Strahm to score Crim from third to give Frisco a 3-0 lead.
The Riders added to their lead with an RBI double from third baseman Jax Biggers in the bottom of the sixth to score Stowers from second.
After White’s departure in the sixth, reliever Seth Nordlin gave up the only two hits of the game in the top of the seventh. Corpus Christi threatened with a two-out single from Alex McKenna and an ensuing double from Cesar Salazar. Frisco right fielder Josh Stowers fielded the double from the corner and relayed with the second baseman Crim to catcher Matt Whatley for the 9-4-3 putout and keep the shutout alive.
Scoring ended for Frisco in the bottom of the eighth inning with a single from Whatley to stretch his hitting streak to ten games, singling Strahm in from second and giving the Riders a 5-0 lead. Whatley’s tallied 13 since the streak began on June 12th.
Frisco and Corpus Christi play game five of a six-game home series on Saturday night at Riders Field, beginning at 7:05 p.m. Riders RHP Tim Brennan (1-2, 3.27 ERA) makes his fourth start with Frisco while Corpus Christi RHP Jaime Melendez (1-7, 5.22 ERA) is set for his 11th start of 2022.
