GreenJackets Find Themselves on Wrong End of Pitcher's Duel

By Augusta GreenJackets | April 15, 2017 10:27 PM ET

With runners at the corners and nobody out in the top of the second inning, Tim Tebow came to bat for the Columbia Fireflies. He hit a ground ball to second resulting in a fielder's choice play and Dash Winningham scoring from third. It later turned out to be the only run of the game in a 1-0 loss by the GreenJackets at Lake Olmstead Stadium Saturday night.

Merandy Gonzalez got the start for the Fireflies and was outstanding. He struck out five GreenJacket hitters in seven and two thirds innings of shutout ball and allowed only four hits. It was Gonzalez's second shutout in as many appearances against the GreenJackets. Cameron Griffin came on in relief to close out the game.

For the GreenJackets, starter Melvin Adon was also dominant. He lasted five and a third and only gave up that one run off of two hits. Both hits came in that second inning. He struck out seven including striking out the side in the fourth inning.

The GreenJackets had an opportunity to score in the second after back to back two out singles by Manuel Geraldo and Brandon Van Horn. That threat ended when Zach Bowers was called out on strikes for the third out. They had another opportunity in the seventh when Ashford Fulmer led off with a single. With one out, he was caught stealing second.

The GreenJackets and the Fireflies will conclude their four game series Sunday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM with the gates opening at 1:00. It is Junior Jackets Kids Club Day featuring an Easter Celebration. The Easter Celebration will involve a post game Easter Egg Hunt with over 2,000 eggs. Kids 12 and under will also be able to run the bases after the game. Before the game, kids will be able to play catch on the field.

Caleb Baragar (0-0, 4.50) will start on the mound for the GreenJackets and Colin Holderman (1-0, 0.00) will get the start for the Fireflies.

The CSRA has packed Lake Olmstead Stadium for three sold out games in a row.
