Gwinnett squanders multiple comebacks as Indians outlast them in series opener

LAWRENCEVILLE, Georgia – Jordan Groshans blasted a two-run home run to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning on Tuesday night, but the Gwinnett Stripers (36-34, 74-70) couldn't finish off the Indianapolis Indians (41-29, 72-73) in a 10-inning 8-6 loss at Gwinnett Field. Indianapolis leads the final series of the year 1-0.

Decisive Plays: A first-inning Duce Gourson solo home run (4) made it 1-0 for Indianapolis. That lead became 2-0 in the second inning as Robert Hassell III tripled and scored on an error. The Stripers tied it up at 2-2 with sacrifice flies in the sixth and seventh courtesy of Chuckie Robinson and David McCabe. In the eighth inning with the score still 2-2, Indianapolis plated three runs to push back ahead at 5-2. In the bottom half of the inning, the Stripers got one back when Luke Williams dropped an RBI single into center. An inning later with a runner on and one out, Groshans clutched up with a two-run shot (2) to tie it at 5-5. In the 10th inning, the Indians again hung up a three spot, this time on Rolddy Muñoz (L, 1-5) to pull back ahead at 8-5. Gwinnett cut it to 8-6 on a Jim Jarvis RBI single and had the winning run at the plate but couldn't muster more late magic against Beau Burrows (W, 7-4), falling 8-6.

Key Contributors: Groshans (1-for-5, homer, 2 RBIs) tied it up with his heroics and Jarvis (4-for-6, RBI) notched a four-hit performance. For Indianapolis, Gourson (2-for-4, homer, 2 RBIs) and Nick Cimillo (2-for-5, 3 RBIs) drove in five of the eight runs.

Noteworthy: The Stripers are now 9-8 in extra innings this season. Groshans’ game-tying blast was his 32nd home run in Minor League Baseball this season. Jarvis' four-hit effort was the 14th time this season he has recorded three-plus hits in a game, as well as his 85th time reaching base safely in 95 Triple-A games.
