Indians No-Hit in Nine for First Time Since ‘02

DES MOINES, IOWA – The Indianapolis Indians were no-hit by the Iowa Cubs for the second time in their all-time series history on Sunday afternoon as the Cubs shut out Indy, 2-0, to take the 3-2 series win.

The Indians (2-3) were last no-hit by the Iowa Oaks in a gem by pitcher Homer Stinson on Aug. 25, 1974 for the only no-no between the two teams. Indianapolis was last held hitless on April 18, 2018 (1) at Syracuse (7.0 innings), with the last 9.0-inning no-hitter coming on June 10, 2002 against Columbus.

Iowa (3-2) pitchers Shelby Miller, Tommy Nance (W, 1-0), Brad Wieck and Ryan Meisinger (S, 1) combined in the effort with 15 strikeouts after Miller made the start on a major league rehab. The three Indians baserunners on the day came via walks in the second, sixth and ninth innings. Chris Sharpe, Cole Tucker and Kevin Kramer were the only three Indians batters to hit a ball to the outfield.

The game was scoreless through four innings before a sacrifice fly off the bat of Nance drove in the winning Iowa run. Abiatal Avelino singled to drive home an insurance run for the Cubs in the eighth.

Miguel Yajure (L, 0-1) made his first Triple-A start for Indianapolis and tossed the team’s second quality start of the year, allowing one run on four hits in 6.0 innings. Yajure and Steven Wright combined for 10 strikeouts, marking the fifth consecutive game the team has fanned double-digit batters

The Indians return to Victory Field for their home opener on Tuesday, May 11 to kick off a six-game series vs. Toledo. RHP Chase De Jong (1-0, 0.00) is set to take the mound after fanning a career-high tying 10 batters in his first start of the season, while Toledo’s starter is yet to be announced. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM ET.
