Claws strike early, Pettibone dominates in 6-1 win
The Claws scored five runs in the second against Suns starter Mitchell Clegg (9-2), and Pettibone (6-6) struck out a season-high eight through eight outstanding innings. He scattered three hits and allowed just one late run.
With the win, the BlueClaws (32-22) are now 14-2 this season after dropping two in a row.
Sebastian Valle and Stephen Batts started the second with base hits, and Jeremy Barnes tripled them both in to tally the first runs of the night. Keoni Ruh brought in Barnes with a sac-fly, and one out later Alan Schoenberger singled and advanced the third on an error by left-fielder JP Ramirez.
Jiwan James tripled and scored Schoenberger for a 4-0 lead, and Korby Mintken capped off the scoring with an RBI single. It was Mintken's first hit of the season with Lakewood in his fifth start.
The Claws added another run in the fifth, as Valle scored on a throwing error by third baseman Justino Cuevas to push the lead to 6-0.
The Suns (23-32) managed just two hits against Pettibone through seven but catcher Sandy Leon hit a solo shot, his second of the season, in the eighth to help Hagerstown avoid the shutout.
Sundat at 2:05 pm RHP Colby Shreve (7-5, 3.67) will take on LHP Evan Bronson (3-2, 4.18).
