Morandini Named to Phillies Coaching Staff
Congratulations to former BlueClaws manager Mickey Morandini, who was named Phillies first base coach for the 2016 season under manager Pete Mackanin.
Morandini managed the BlueClaws during the 2012 and 2013 seasons after managing Williamsport in 2011. He spent 2014 as a coach with Lehigh Valley and 2015 as a coach with both Lehigh Valley and Reading.
Six players that played for Morandini with the BlueClaws have already gone on to make their big league debuts (in chronological order): LHP Mario Hollands, RHP Ken Giles, OF Aaron Altherr, 3B Maikel Franco, RHP Severino Gonzalez, RHP Colton Murray.
Morandini played 11 seasons in the major leagues for the Phillies (1990-97; 2000), Chicago Cubs (1998-99) and Toronto Blue Jays (2000). He finished with a .268 batting average, 209 doubles, 54 triples and 123 stolen bases. An All-Star second baseman in 1995, Morandini played for the 1993 National League champion Phillies.
He is the third former BlueClaws manager to serve on a major league coaching staff after leaving the BlueClaws, following 2002 manager Jeff Manto (Pirates hitting coach from 2006-07 and White Sox hitting coach from 2012-13) and 2010 manager Mark Parent (White Sox bench coach from 2012-15).
