TOLEDO, Oh. - Louisville Bats' right-hander Tyler Mahle has had his contract selected by the Cincinnati Reds, the team announced Friday night. Mahle, 22, began the season rated by Baseball America as the 12th-best prospect in the organization. He is scheduled to make his Major League debut on Sunday in Cincinnati against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
When he debuts, he will be the 20th pitcher this season to pitch for the Bats and the Reds and the fourth to make his Major League debut.
He has started 10 games for the Bats since being promoted on June 22. He made his Triple-A debut four days later on June 26 against the Norfolk Tides at Harbor Park, pitching six innings, allowing three runs, none earned, with a Triple-A-high nine strikeouts.
In 59 and one-third innings, he is 3-4 with a 2.73 earned run average while striking out 51 and walking just 13. He has gone at least seven innings and allowed three earned runs or less in four of his 10 starts. He is also tied for second on the team with Cody Reed with seven quality starts.
Since the All-Star Break, he ranks fifth in the International League in ERA (2.00), WHIP (0.93) and opponents average (.201).
Before his promotion, he was named a Double-A Southern League All-Star. He was also selected as the Southern League Player of the Month in April after going 4-0 with a 0.55 ERA in five starts including the first Southern League perfect game in 47 years on April 22 against the Mobile Bay Bears.
