Welcome to the 25th season of Myrtle Beach Pelicans baseball! We can’t thank you enough for making the 2023 season such a success. We’re so excited to welcome you to Pelicans Ballpark for another evening of fun, family-friendly entertainment in the most unique setting in all of professional baseball.

Here, America’s favorite pastime meets both the beautiful beaches of the Grand Strand and the wonderful Midwestern tradition of the 2016 world-champion Chicago Cubs to create a truly one-of-a-kind experience for you, your family and your friends.

We take tremendous pride when our fan experience is recognized nationally. Our ballpark experience has been ranked amongst the Top Stadium Experiences in all of sports by Stadium Journey Magazine, and was recently named the #1 Minor League Baseball Experience. Pelicans Ballpark also received numerous TripAdvisor.Com Certificates of Excellence. These honors are incredibly humbling and reaffirm why all of us with the Pelicans understand that your fan experience is our top priority. It is also testament to you, the amazing fans who bring the stadium to life, filling it with energy and fun each year for the past two plus decades.

Buddy Bailey will return to manage the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and is in his 36th season as a minor league manager. Bailey is the winningest active minor league manager with 2,367 regular season victories. He is joined by George Thanopoulos, Armando Gabino, Roberto Vaz, D'Angelo Jimenez, Maggie Lowenhar & Allen Cooper.

Fan Code of Conduct

FAN CODE OF CONDUCT - Out of respect for fellow guests, players, coaches, and ballpark staff, all guests are prohibited from:

Trespassing on the playing field at any time;
Interfering with baseballs that are in play;
Throwing or tossing objects;
Using foul, obscene or derogatory language (see below) or gestures;
Misusing or overconsuming alcohol, including, underage consumption;
Behaving in a manner that is disruptive, unruly, or abusive;
Accessing areas of the ballpark without a proper ticket, pass, or credential;
Misusing tickets, passes, or credentials in any way; or
Bringing prohibited items (listed below) into the ballpark.

Furthermore, guests are required to wear shirts and shoes at all times, and guests appearing intoxicated will be ejected from the ballpark and turned over to the Myrtle Beach Police Department.

Derogatory language is defined as offensive language concerning a person’s race, ethnicity, gender, religion, disability, age, sexual orientation, or national origin, and anyone using such language is subject to automatic ejection from the ballpark.

Violations of the Fan Code of Conduct will not be tolerated and may lead to ejection from the ballpark, a ban on attending future games, or other consequences. Guests who are found to have used derogatory language will be ejected from the ballpark.

Guest may report a violation to the Fan Code of Conduct to any game day employee, front office employee, or at Guest Services which is located on the main concourse behind home plate.

PROHIBITED ITEMS - The following items are prohibited in the ballpark: beach balls, inflatables, glass bottles, fireworks, firearms or any other weapons, laser devices or pointers, skateboards, rollerblades, skate shoes, hover boards, toy guns or knives, sticks, clubs, unmanned aerial vehicles, aerosol cans, baseball bats, hard sided coolers, and containers larger than 16x16x8 inches.

Pelicans Throughout the Years: 1999 - 2024

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans landed at the beach in 1999. Since then, the Pelicans have had three major league team affiliations, won four Carolina League Championships, and have entertained hundreds of thousands of fans throughout the past 25 seasons. During their inaugural season in Myrtle Beach, the Pelicans made an immediate impact both on and off the field. The team became a focal point of entertainment for locals and tourists alike, drawing fans with engaging promotions and baseball.

Our Home: Pelicans Ballpark

The stadium, known as Pelicans Ballpark, was built in 1998. Leaning into the family friendly environment, there is so much more to do than just watch baseball.

Pelicans Ballpark can seat 4,800 fans but can hold a total of 6,599. The current seats were repurposed from Fulton County Stadium, former home of the Atlanta Braves. In addition to the seating bowl, there are nine suites, which fans can rent, enjoy food and watch the game from a different perspective.

Over the years, Pelicans Ballpark has undergone renovations to give fans different game viewing opportunities. In 2006, left field bleachers were added to give fans a different perspective when watching the game. This bleacher section allows fans to catch home runs that may be hit into left field. Additionally, a sandy beach seating area was added down the left field line. There, fans can watch the game by enjoying one of the most unique experiences in Minor League Baseball. Finally a deck, known as RipTydz Rally Deck was added and features a full bar and high top open seating with one of the best views in baseball.

Fans can experience different aspects of the Chicago Cubs right here at the beach. Once the Pelicans became affiliated with the Chicago Cubs in 2015, the ballpark underwent a “cubsification”. Fans can eat at Clarke & Addison Grille, which brings the Chicago Cubs Marquee to the beach and is named after the crossroads at which Wrigley Field is located. This location features food items named after famous Chicago Cubs players. Kids can also experience a “mini Wrigley Field” while playing in Grissom Plaza.

One of the most popular aspects of the Ballpark is the Road to the Show wall, which features every single player who has worn a Pelicans jersey and a major league team jersey over the past 25 years. The number of players on the wall increases each year and now totals over 200.

Did you know the Pelicans have been affiliated with three major league teams?

At the beginning of the Pelicans tenure, the Birds were affiliated with the Atlanta Braves. In 2010, the Birds began their four-season stint as a Texas Rangers affiliate. Since 2015, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans have been affiliated with the Chicago Cubs. Originally an Advanced-A level minor league team, the Pelicans reclassified to Single-A in 2020.

Throughout this series, “Pelicans Throughout the Years”, we will highlight many aspects of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans that make this organization unique. We will delve deep into the past 25 seasons, so stay tuned to learn more about the history of the Birds!

Notable Former Pelicans

Ian Happ (2016)

The Chicago Cubs’ first-round pick (ninth overall) in 2015, Happ maneuvered quickly through the organization to reach the major leagues in 2017. The former Cincinnati Bearcat made his presence felt immediately by launching a home run in his big league debut on May 13, 2017 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

Happ finished eighth in the rookie of the year voting in 2017 after batting .253/.328/.514 with 24 homers and 68 RBIs in 115 games. He followed that up in 2018 by hitting .233/.353/.408 with 15 home runs and 44 RBIs in 142 games, all while being the youngest position player on the Cubs’ roster.

The Pittsburgh native starred for Myrtle Beach in 2016, slashing .296/.410/.475 with 16 doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 43 RBIs in 69 games before forcing a promotion to Double-A Tennessee. At the time of his promotion, Happ was leading the entire Class A-Advanced level with 48 walks while ranking third in on-base percentage (.410) and routh in both average (.296) and OPS (.885) In June of 2016, Happ posted a .361/.461/.607 line in 19 games.

Other former Pelicans of note include...

Freddie Freeman (2009)

A second-round draft pick in 2007, Freddie Freeman was always a highly touted prospect. His introduction to pro ball, however, was a rough one. The Braves newest 100-million dollar man hit just .268 and posted a .674 OPS in rookie ball in 2007.

That was the last time Freeman had any issues hitting professional pitching. Freeman was a mid-season and postseason South Atlantic All-Star in 2008 with Low-A Rome. He went on to crush Carolina League pitching in 2009 with the Pelicans.He led Myrtle Beach in batting average (.302) and clubbed 19 doubles and six home runs in just half a season before a promotion to Double-A.

On September 1, 2010, Freeman was a big leaguer at just 20 years old. He finished second in the 2011 National League Rookie of the Year voting.

In 2013, Freeman transformed from a good player to a great one. Earning his first National League All-Star selection, Freeman finished fifth in the NL MVP voting while setting career highs in batting average (.319) and RBIs (109). Freeman would make his next All-Star appearance in 2018 where he hit .309/.388/.505 on the year and led the National League in games played (162), hit (191) and doubles (44).

Kyle Hendricks (2012)

Across four minor league seasons, Kyle Hendricks pitched his way into the big leagues in 2014. Not overpowering and often overlooked, Hendricks was considered the secondary piece in a trade that sent Ryan Dempster to the Texas Rangers in 2012, yet he has out-performed fellow trade-mate, third baseman Christian Villanueva (who also played for the Pelicans in 2012).

Hendricks posted a 2.69 ERA in the Minor LEagues, including a 3.28 mark at Triple-A Iowa before getting promoted to Chicago. That was the beginning of a stellar second half in the majors. Hendricks went 7-2 with a 2.46 ERA across 13 starts while walking just 13 in 80.1 innings. The Dartmouth alum was the National League Rookie of the Month in August and finished seventh in the NL Rookie of the Year voting.

The California native followed up his loud rookie season with a strong campaign as the newest member of the Cubs’ full-time rotation in 2015. Hendricks went 8-7 with a 3.95 ERA over 32 starts, helping the Cubs reach the National League Championship Series by defeating the Cardinals in Game 2 of the NLDS.

He would one-up himself the following year. Hendricks led all of baseball with a sparkling 2.13 ERA while posting a 16-8 record and allowing 142 hits in 190.0 innings. The right-hander finished third in the NL Cy Young voting and helped the Cubs win their first World Series in 108 year, starting the decisive Game 7.

Hendricks’ success should come as no surprise to Pelicans fans. The Californian dominated Carolina League teams in 2012. Before departing in the trade, he logged 130.2 innings in Myrtle Beach with nearly a 10-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio, hurled two complete games and tossed a shutout frame in the 2012 California/Carolina League All-Star Game in Winston-Salem. His 2.82 ERA from that season is good for 10th on the franchise’s career record list.

Joey Gallo (2014)

The Texas Rangers first-round pick (39th overall) in 2012, Gallo quickly rose through the Rangers farm system putting up monstrous home run totals in the process before making his debut with the big club in 2015.

Gallo’s 2014 stint in Myrtle Beach was a short one but it was impactful. The Las Vegas native blistered 21 homers in just 58 games with the Pelicans while hitting .323/.463/.735. He was named the Carolina League Most Valuable Player despite only spending half the season in the Grand Strand. Gallo was promoted to Double-A Frisco midway through the year and the power continued. Gallo blasted 21 more homers for the RoughRiders bringing his season total to 42 which was second to Kris Bryant (43) in all of Minor League Baseball.

Gallo made his major league debut on June 2, 2015 for the Rangers and continued what he had done in the minors by going deep in his first two major league starts. After spending most of the 2016 season in Triple-A, Gallo has been an everyday player for the Rangers over the last two seasons and his finished top-five in the league in homeruns both years hitting 41 in 2017 and 40 in 2018.

Gleyber Torres (2015-16)

Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2013 by the Chicago Cubs, Gleyber Torres immediately became on of the Cubs top prospects. At just 17 years old, Torres made his debut for the Arizona Cubs in 2014 and hit .279/.372/.377 and was promoted to Boise for the final seven games of the year and went 11 for 28 with an OPS of 1,255.

Torres broke camp in 2015 with the South Bend Cubs and dominated the league hitting .293/.353/.386 and was named to the Midwest League All-Star Team and was named the League’s Prospect of the Year. He was promoted to Myrtle Beach on September 2, 2015 and finished the year with the Birds helping them to the 2015 Carolina League title.

Torres opened 2016 as the Chicago Cubs No. 1 overall prospect, according to Baseball America, and he did not disappoint. The 19-year-old hit .275 with nine homers and 47 RBI in 94 games for the Pelicans before being traded to the Yankees in a deal that brought Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs.

On April 22, 2018, Torres made his major league debut with the Yankees and went on to have an outstanding rookie campaign. He hit .271/.340/.480 with 24 homers and 77 RBIs. He was named an American League All-Star as the third youngest player in the league and went on to finish third in the AL Rookie of the Year voting.

David Bote (2016)

David Bote etched his name into Chicago Cubs history with his pinch-hit, walk-off grand slam on August 12th, 2018 but before skyrocketing to stardom on the mainstage, Bote made waves in the Carolina League with the Pelicans.

Originally the Chicago Cubs 18th round selection in the 2012 draft, Bote toiled his way through the Cubs system before breaking out with the Pelicans during the 2016 season. Bote became an instant fan favorite as he smashed Carolina League pitching to the tune of a .337/.410/.518 slash with six homers and 41 RBI.

After two more seasons of bouncing around the Cubs’ system, Bote made his major league debut on April 21, 2018 in a start against the Colorado Rockies. He finished his first year in the majors hitting .239/.319/.408 while hitting six homers and driving in 33 runs.

NOCHE DE LOS PELÍCANOS DE MYRTLE BEACH

On a select number of games each season, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans become los Pelícanos de Myrtle Beach. "Copa de la Diversión," or "Fun Cup," is a season-long event series created by MiLB and specifically designed to embrace the culture and values that resonate most with participating teams' local U.S. Hispanic/Latino communities. On May 12, June 2 , and July 28 of the 2024 season the Pelicans will become los Pelícanos de Myrtle Beach and wear special jerseys. Noche de los Pelícanos de Myrtle Beach is presented by El Patron 93.5.

Meet the 2024 Myrtle Beach Pelicans

PITCHERS

#20 Juan Bello: The 19-year-old pitched in the Arizona Complex League last season in four games with three starts. Bello threw just 4 1/3 innings last year, but tossed 31 1/3 innings in 2022 in the Dominican Summer League, with an ERA of 4.02, being used mainly as a starter. The right-hander was signed as an international free agent in 2022.

#12 Garrett Brown: A former pitcher at Georgia, Brown made his Myrtle Beach debut at the end of 2023 and appeared in four games with an ERA of 2.84 while collecting two saves. The 24-year-old was an 18^th round draft pick in 2022 after pitching two seasons for the Bulldogs.

#33 Nick Dean: The former Maryland Terrapin will make his Cubs organization debut after being selected in the 19^th round last year. Dean thrived as a starter for Maryland, with 219 strikeouts in 43 starts across four years. He was named Third Team All-Big Ten in 2022.

#19 Kenten Egbert: After pitching for Miami (OH) in college, the Ohio native was signed as an undrafted free agent in the summer of 2023. Egbert was named First Team All-MAC in 2023 after holding a 3.96 ERA in 15 games and 10 starts, striking out 90 batters while walking just 29.

#32 Dominic Hambley: The Canadian made a brief stop in Myrtle Beach last year before pitching most of the year in Arizona. The 20-year-old right-hander was drafted in the 18^th round in 2021 and has appeared in 25 games in the Arizona Complex League over the last three seasons.

#21 Ty Johnson: Another college arm starting the year in Myrtle Beach, the former Ball State Cardinal was drafted in the 15^th round by the Cubs in 2023. The tall right-hander lowered his ERA in each of his three years in Muncie, Indiana, finishing with a 4.53 ERA in 16 games in 2023.

#41 Scarlyn Lebron: A main piece in the Birds’ bullpen last year, the 22-year-old picked up two saves and pitched 23 games in relief in 2023. 2024 will be Lebron’s fourth year in the Cubs’ organization after being signed as a free agent in 2021.

#16 Shane Marshall: Another former pitcher at Georgia, Marshall was drafted in the 14^th round of the 2022 draft. The right-hander has not made his professional debut and pitched just three games for the Bulldogs while mainly spending time as a catcher.

#48 Mason McGwire: The son of former MLB slugger Mark McGwire, Mason was taken in the eighth round of the 2022 draft by the Cubs. The 20-year-old righty was mainly used as a starter in the Arizona Complex League last season with 36 strikeouts across 35 1/3 innings.

#53 Branden Noriega: The native of Miami, FL was drafted in the 11^th round of the 2022 MLB draft. He pitched in seven games for the Pelicans with one start in 2023 before finishing in the Arizona Complex League.

#52 Jack Patterson: After dealing with multiple injuries, Patterson will take the mound for the first time since 2019. The 2018 draft pick started five games for Myrtle Beach in the 2019 season before ending the year at Double A Tennessee.

#30 Kenyi Perez: A returning member of the 2023 Pelicans’ bullpen, Perez made 10 appearances last season while also posting a 1.00 ERA through five games in the Arizona Complex League. The 22-year-old was signed as an international free agent in 2020.

#57 Starlyn Pichardo: At just 19 years old, Pichardo made his Pelicans debut in 2023 and ended with a 7-1 record through 24 games out of the bullpen. The Dominican Republic native struck out 52 and walked just 29 through 40 innings last season. The right-hander was signed as an international free agent in 2021.

#49 Francis Reynoso: After starting his career as a first baseman in the Cardinals organization, the 21-year-old was signed as a free agent by the Cubs and converted to a pitcher last year. The Dominican Republic native posted a 2.20 ERA across 20 games in relief with just 15 walks and 42 strikeouts.

#40 Erian Rodriguez: A main arm out of the bullpen for the Pelicans last year, the 13^th round pick in 2021 appeared in 26 games with three starts last year. The native of Panama struck out 74 batters across 69 1/3 innings in a Pelicans uniform in 2023.

#53 Marino Santy: The strikeout leader for the Pelicans last season with 100 for the year, the 22-year-old returns after pitching 22 games with 16 starts in 2023. Santy was signed as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2020.

#17 David Avitia: The Arizona native played 28 games for the Birds last year and caught 10 runners stealing. The 25-year-old was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2022.

#24 Wally Soto: The 21-year-old played 23 games in the Arizona Complex League last season and spent time at catcher, first base, and designated hitter. Soto made his Myrtle Beach debut in 2022, catching one inning. He was signed as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2020.

#34 Carter Trice: The highest pick in the 2023 draft class on the Pelicans’ 2024 Opening Day roster, Trice played last season at NC State before being drafted in the 12^th round. Primarily an infielder in college, the Virginia native was converted to a catcher by the Cubs after being drafted.

#44 Drew Bowser: The 20th-round selection in the 2023 draft will make his full-season debut after experiencing three College World Series appearances with Stanford. The Los Angeles, CA native hit .295 through 13 games in the Arizona Complex League last season after being drafted.

#11 Alexis Hernandez: The younger Hernandez brother, Alexis impressed in the Arizona Complex League in 2023 by hitting .315 through 37 games. Hernandez enters 2024 as the Cubs’ No. 24 prospect by MLB Pipeline. The 19-year-old was signed as an international free agent in 2022 out of the Dominican Republic.

#1 Cristian Hernandez: Ranked as the No. 23 Cubs prospect by MLB Pipeline, Hernandez led the Pelicans in games played last year with 106. The Dominican Republic native spent time at both shortstop and second base in 2023. The 20-year-old was signed as an international free agent in 2021.

#5 Christopher Paciolla: Paciolla makes his full-season debut with the Pelicans this year after being selected in the third round out of high school in 2022. The former UCLA commit hit .260 with four home runs in the Arizona Complex League last year.

#7 Reginald Preciado: After dealing with injuries the last two years, the 20-year-old makes his return to Myrtle Beach after playing 73 games across 2022 and 2023. The native of Panama was dealt to the Cubs in the trade that sent Yu Darvish to the Padres in December of 2020.
