Sorrell Launches First Pro Homer, Pelicans Split Twin Bill With Fireflies

COLUMBIA, S.C. (August 7, 2026). – The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (14-26, 41-63) split the second doubleheader of the week against the Columbia Fireflies (20-18, 53-50) falling in walkoff fashion 6-5 in game one, and taking a 14-3 win in game two on Friday night at Segra Park. The Pelicans now trail 3-1 in the weeklong series.

Game One

In the makeup game from Thursday night, the Fireflies took a 6-5 walkoff victory over the Pelicans.

The score was tied 5-5 in the bottom of the scventh when the Fireflies mounted a rally. Sean Gamble, Jhosmmel Zue, and JC Vanek were walked to load the bases. The next batter Connor Rasmussen hit a sacrifice fly to score the winning run, 6-5.

With the Fireflies trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth, they were able to tie the game. Yandel Ricardo singled and then stoel second base. A few batters later with a runner on first, Ricardo advanced to third on a wild pitch. After the next batter was walked to load the bases, Rasmussen drew a walk to bring home the tying run.

Columbia started the scoring in the bottom of the first. Henry Ramos hit a single and later moved to third on a single from Ricardo. The next batter Gamble brought home Ramos with a sacrifice bunt which made the score 1-0.

The Fireflies added three more runs in the bottom of the second, capped off by an RBI single from Roni Cabrera to take a 4-0 advantage.

Myrtle Beach cut the deficit to 4-3 in the top of the third. Derniche Valdez walked and then scored on an RBI triple by Jose Silva to make the score 4-1. Jan Reyes followed with an RBI single to trim the deficit in half 4-2. A batter later, Jhoander Irigoyen smacked an RBI double which made the score 4-3.

The Pelicans took the lead in the top of fourth. Derik Alcantara singled and then stole second base. After Silva and Alexis Hernandez were walked, Ethan Conrad laced a go-ahead two-run single to give the Birds a 5-4 lead.

RHP Michael Braswell III (1-0, 6.75) received the win for the Fireflies. RHP Sam Mettert (0-3, 6.43) was tagged with the loss for the Pelicans.

Game Two

Myrtle Beach took a 1-0 leadwith a solo home run from Caden Sorrell (1), his first in his pro career. A few batter later, Eli Lovich singled. The next batter Valdez (8) smashed a two-run home run to extend the Pelicans lead to 3-0.

Columbia struck back in the bottom of the first. Ramos was walked and later advanced to third on a single from Josh Hammond. Two batters later, Cabrera lined an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-1.

The Pelicans added to their lead in the top of the fourth. Ivan Cespedes hammered a two-run home run to give the Birds a 5-1 lead.

Myrtle Beach tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth. Conrad walked and then moved to second on a single from Lovich. Valdez followed with an RBI double to make the score 6-1. Then a wild pitch scored Lovich to make the game 7-1. A few batter later, Cruz hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 8-1.

The Fireflies scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth, capped off by an RBI single from Ricardo to trim the score to 8-3.

Then the Pelicans put up six runs in the top of the seventh to take a 14-3 lead, capped off by an RBI single from Conrad.

RHP Luke Alwood (1-0, 0.00) received the win for the Pelicans, coming up just one pitch shy of tossing an immaculate inning. RHP Coleman Picard (1-2, 3.49) was tagged with the loss for the Fireflies.

Myrtle Beach will continue their six-game set against the Columbia Fireflies (Single-A Kansas City Royals) on Saturday, August 8 at Segra Park. First pitch is slated for 6:05 PM. RHP Riely Hunsaker (3-3, 5.08) will start on the hill for the Pelicans. RHP Jose Gutierrez (8-4, 3.94) gets the ball for the Fireflies.
