Figthin Phils to Begin Season Against the Portland Sea Dogs

(Reading, PA) - The Reading Fightin Phils, Double-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, take on the Portland Sea Dogs, Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, in their home and season opening series of the 2025 season. This will be the first time the Fightin Phils open their season at home since 2022. The home opener is April 4 at 6:45 p.m. and kicks off the three-game series against the Sea Dogs.
The 2025 season also signifies the 75th Anniversary of America’s Classic Ballpark. To celebrate both Opening Day and this anniversary, on Friday, April 4, the first 4,000 fans will receive an R-Phils Hawaiian Shirt thanks to Savage Auto Group, Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center, honoring the Downtown Campus staff, Feesers, and Alarm Tech. On Saturday, the first 1,500 kids will receive a printed team photo and home schedule presented by Feeser’s. To close out the series on Sunday, the first 1,000 kids will receive a mystery bobblehead of past R-Phils players while also experiencing a tribute to the new Minecraft Movie.
Reading and Portland met previously in 2024 as this series served as the Fightin Phils’ home opener of the season. Portland ultimately took four-of-six from Reading in the home-opening series and in total went 8-13 against Portland during the 2024 season.
The Fightin Phils are coming off a 58-77 record from the 2024 season where they finished fifth in the Eastern League. The Portland Sea Dogs finished off their 2024 season with a 78-60 record and finished first in the Eastern League’s Northeast Division. Despite finishing with the best record in the Northeast Division last season, the Sea Dogs did not make the playoffs since they didn't win the division in either half of the season.
RHP Jean Cabrera will get his start for Reading on Friday, and he will go opposite RHP Tyler Uberstine. Following that, Reading starter RHP Gabe Mosser and RHP David Sandlin will match up on Saturday. Finishing up on Sunday, Reading’s RHP Griff McGarry will go against LHP Connelly Early.
Top 30 Red Sox prospects on the Sea Dogs include: outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia, RHP David Sandlin, RHP Connelly Early, shortstop Mikey Romero, RHP Yordanny Monegro, and RHP Blake Wehun.
After this series, the Fightin Phils will head to New Jersey to take on the Somerset Patriots, a Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees. The next home series will start on Tuesday, April 15, which opens a six-game series against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets.
