Rochester Falls 6-3 to Buffalo in Series Opener

The Cocos Locos de Rochester (31-21, 76-49) drop their series opener to the Buffalo Bisons (28-23, 63-63) by a score of 6-3 Tuesday night. 3B Trey Lipscomb extended his hit streak to 20 games with a fifth-inning solo home run, giving him sole possession of the longest hit streak in the International League this season. Tuesday night saw six Rochester pitchers make appearances on the bump, with RHP Andry Lara leading the way with 2.2 scoreless innings of work.

The top of the first inning started with a leadoff walk from RF Rudy Martin Jr. After a strikeout, a one-out single from SS Jay Harry placed Buffalo runners on the corners. 1B Sean Keys followed up with an RBI ground out to score Martin Jr. for the game’s opening run. A single to center field from DH Yohendrick Pinango brought Harry in to score, giving the Bisons a 2-0 lead after the opening frame.

After four hitless innings, red-hot Trey Lipscomb got the Rochester offense rolling with a fifth-inning solo home run. His 28th homer of the season gives him sole possession of second place among all International League batters this season. Two pitches later, DH Cayden Wallace knocked a hard-hit double down the third base line. Two consecutive Rochester ground outs allowed Wallace to find his way home, tying the score at 2-2 after five innings of play.

Three consecutive walks to open the next half-inning put Buffalo in prime position to answer right back. A high fly ball to deep center field from 2B Lenyn Sosa landed in play just out of the reach of Pineda, scoring one run to put Buffalo back in the lead. A hard hit ball to first base rolled into right field, allowing two more Buffalo runners to cross home plate. Sosa scored after C William Simoneit grounded into a double play, pushing the Buffalo lead to 6-2.

Down four runs coming into the final frame, the second hit of the game from Trey Lipscomb moved 1B Yohandy Morales to second base after his walk. Cayden Wallace brought home Morales with an RBI-single to cut the deficit to three. Two consecutive outs would squash Rochester’s comeback hopes, as they fall to the Bisons 6-3.

RHP Zak Kent started the evening on the mound for Rochester, pitching 2.1 innings and allowing two runs on three hits with a walk, while dealing three strikeouts in the process. First out of the Cocos Locos’ bullpen was Andry Lara, who struck out three batters of his own and allowed one hit and two walks over 2.2 innings of work. LHP Matt Krook allowed three walks and conceded four runs on one hit through his 1.0 inning of play. Coming on in relief was RHP Justin Lawrence, pitching one full inning and striking out one batter. Up next on the mound was RHP Kyle Nicolas, who allowed two hits and one walk in his one full inning of play. The final Rochester pitcher was RHP Connor Van Scoyoc, who finished the evening with one hit allowed in 1.0 inning pitched.

The Cocos Locos de Rochester Player of the Game is 3B Trey Lipscomb. The former Tennessee Volunteer went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, RBI, and run scored. The homer was his 28th on the campaign, which extended his hit streak to an IL-leading 20 games. Over that stretch, he leads the league with 34 hits, 14 extra-base hits, 65 total runs, and a share of first in runs scored with 22.

Looking to get back into the win column and keep pace in the International League second half, Rochester will host Buffalo for game two of the series Wednesday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. First on the mound for the Red Wings will be rehabbing LHP DJ Herz, taking on RHP Josh Stephan of the Bisons.
