Red Wings Slug Their Way to Victory Wednesday Night

The Rochester Red Wings (42-29, 87-57) rallied from an early three-run deficit to defeat the Buffalo Bisons (32-36, 67-76), 12-4, Wednesday night at Sahlen Field. 3B Cortland Lawson and SS Seaver King hit back-to-back solo home runs in the fifth inning to turn a one-run deficit into Rochester’s first lead of the night. Lawson added an RBI triple in the seventh as part of a three-hit performance, while DH Cayden Wallace drove in three runs with a pair of singles. The Red Wings scored in four consecutive innings from the fourth through the seventh to even the six-game series at one game apiece. The victory maintained Rochester’s tie with Indianapolis for the International League second-half lead at 42-29.

Buffalo’s first opportunity took shape in the second inning when SS Josh Kasevich reached on a throwing error. LF RJ Schreck followed with a double to right field, putting a pair of runners in scoring position. A single to center from 1B Peyton Williams brought both runners home and gave the Bisons a 2-0 lead.

RF Daz Cameron drove a triple to center field in the third inning. Kasevich followed later in the frame with a single to center, plating Cameron to extend Buffalo’s advantage to 3-0.

Seaver King opened Rochester’s fourth inning with a hit-by-pitch. A single to right from 1B Buddy Kennedy moved King to second before LF Trey Lipscomb lined a single to center, bringing King home and cutting the deficit to 3-1. Wallace followed with another single to center, scoring Kennedy to pull Rochester within one run. A passed ball moved Lipscomb and Wallace into scoring position, and C Riley Adams drew a walk to load the bases. RF Leandro Pineda brought Lipscomb home on a fielder’s choice to tie the game at 3-3.

A triple to center field from C Shawn Ross set the stage in the bottom of the fourth. CF Rhylan Thomas followed with a single to center, bringing Ross home to put Buffalo back in front, 4-3.

Cortland Lawson was first to the plate for Rochester in the fifth inning. He sent a solo home run to right-center field to tie the game at four, his first Triple-A round-tripper. King made it back-to-back with a solo shot to center, giving the Red Wings a 5-4 lead. Kennedy kept the inning going with a double to center, and Adams lined a single to right to bring him home and extend Rochester’s advantage to 6-4.

A walk to Lawson gave Rochester a baserunner in the sixth inning. Kennedy was hit by a pitch before PR Johnathon Thomas took over on the basepaths. Lipscomb walked to load the bases, and Wallace lined a single to right field to score Lawson and Thomas, pushing the Red Wings’ lead to 8-4.

Adams drew a leadoff walk in the seventh inning. Pineda singled to center to move him to third, and Adams crossed the plate when 1B Liover Peguero grounded into a double play, extending Rochester’s lead to 9-4. CF Sam Petersen followed with a walk, and Lawson tripled to center to bring him home. King lined a single to center to score Lawson and push the advantage to 11-4.

Peguero singled to center in the ninth inning. Lawson followed with a single to left to move him to third, and King walked to load the bases. Thomas drew another walk to bring Peguero home and extend Rochester’s lead to 12-4. Buffalo went 1-2-3 in the bottom half to solidify an eight-run Red Wings win.

LHP Matt Krook started for Rochester and allowed two unearned runs on three hits over 1.2 innings, striking out two without a walk. RHP Paxton Schultz followed with 1.1 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits and striking out two without a walk. RHP Ben Grable surrendered one earned run on three hits in 0.2 innings. RHP Joe Glassey earned the win after retiring all four batters he faced over 1.1 innings, striking out two. RHP Max Kranick set down all six of his opponents across 2.0 innings with one strikeout. RHP Clayton Beeter worked a scoreless eighth, walking two and striking out two. RHP Jake Bird retired the side in order in the ninth to close out the victory.

3B-2B Cortland Lawson earned tonight’s Player of the Game with a 3-for-4 performance that included a home run, a triple, a walk, two RBI and three runs scored. His solo shot to right-center in the fifth tied the game at four, and his RBI triple to center in the seventh extended Rochester’s lead before he scored on King’s single.

Rochester and Buffalo return to Sahlen Field Thursday afternoon for the third game of their six-game series. RHP Isaac Lyon will take the mound against Bisons right-hander Richard Gallardo. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m.
