ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Corpus Christi Hooks capped off the 2019 Houston Astros Futures Weekend by out-slugging the Round Rock Express to the tune of 7-3 on Sunday afternoon at Dell Diamond. E-Train LF Yordan Alvarez notched his first home run of the year at home, but the Corpus Christi bats tallied 11 hits to sweep the exhibition series.
Express RHP Corbin Martin suffered the loss after allowing three runs on two hits while walking three in 1.1 innings of work. On the winning side, Corpus Christi RHP Brandon Bailey held Round Rock scoreless on just two hits in 3.0 frames.
E-Train RHP Akeem Bostick earned the starting nod, allowing a run on three hits in 3.0 solid innings. For the Hooks, starter LHP Brett Adcock permitted a pair of runs on two hits while walking six in 3.0 frames.
Corpus Christi opened the scoring in the second innings as 3B Abraham Toro doubled prior to a Stephen Wrenn RBI single. However, Round Rock struck right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Alvarez leveled the game at 1-1 by blasting a towering home run past the concourse in right field. After RF Drew Ferguson was hit with a pitch in the next plate appearance, 1B Taylor Jones gave the Express the lead with an RBI double.
The visitors regained the advantage in the fourth thanks to a Toro walk followed by a hard-hit Chuckie Robinson single. During the play, Ferguson misplayed the ball in right field, allowing Toro to score on an error. C Lorenzo Quintana then gave his team the lead at 3-2 with an RBI single.
Round Rock once again fought back to tie the score, this time without registering a base hit. DH Derek Fisher opened the fourth with a walk before promptly stealing second. After a Kyle Tucker groundout that moved Fisher to third, the speedy outfielder raced home on a Ronel Blanco wild pitch to knot the game at 3-3.
However, the Hooks scored the final four runs of the game to collect the victory. In the fifth, 1B J.J. Matijevic walked before ultimately scoring on a Toro RBI single. An inning later, Wrenn tripled then scored on a Quintana groundout. Corpus Christi pushed the gap to 7-3 thanks to a two-run Granden Goetzman homer in the ninth.
