METAIRIE, Louisiana - The Round Rock Express (3-2) continued to drive balls out of the park on Monday's contest against the New Orleans Baby Cakes (2-3) at the Shrine on Airline. E-Train SS Myles Straw and RF Kyle Tucker recorded their first home runs of the 2019 campaign in the 5-4 victory.
New Orleans RHP Ben Meyer (0-1, 8.31) suffered the loss after giving up four runs on four hits and three walks in 4.1 innings pitched. On the winning side, RHP Rogelio Armenteros (1-0, 1.69) struck out five Baby Cakes' batters with no walks in 5.1 innings in his first start with the Express.
The E-Train struck first in the top of the fourth inning as 3B Jack Mayfield walked before eventually coming home when Tucker sent a two-run homer over the right field fence to give his team a 2-0 lead. After an ensuing Garrett Stubbs walk to open the fifth inning, Straw smoked another two-run homer into center field, giving the Express a four-run lead. Mayfield kept the ball rolling after LHP Jarlin García replaced Meyer on New Orleans' mound, sending a blast to center field for his second homer of the series.
The Baby Cakes bats came to life in the sixth inning when 2B Isan Díaz and 3B Jon Berti collected a pair of solo home runs to cut their deficit to 5-2. The next inning, SS Yadiel Rivera added another solo home run to the scorecard to put New Orleans within 5-3.
The Baby Cakes came within one in the eighth inning when DH Harold Ramirez touched home following a wild pitch by RHP Brendan McCurry after coming in to relieve RHP Ralph Garza. The E-Train defense got the job done in the final inning, allowing only one man on base, to secure a 5-3 win.
Round Rock returns home Tuesday night as they take on the Nashville Sounds (Texas Rangers affiliate) in game one of a three-game series. Express RHP Forrest Whitley (0-0, 0.00), the top prospect in the Houston Astros organization and the top pitching prospect in all of baseball, is scheduled to face Sounds LHP Taylor Hearn (0-1, 7.20). First pitch at Dell Diamond is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
