Former Longhorns Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley to Throw Out First Pitch April 4
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Baseball, music and Texas football collide at Dell Diamond on April 4th! Opening Weekend festivities continue Friday night as former Longhorns quarterback Colt McCoy will throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the Round Rock Express' game with the Oklahoma City RedHawks. Former teammate and Longhorn wide receiver Jordan Shipley will catch the pitch.
McCoy, the former star quarterback of the University of Texas, is something of a Texas football legend. After leading 2A Jim Ned High School to the school's only state finals appearance, McCoy went on to star for Mack Brown's Longhorns from 2005 to 2009, where he became the most prolific all-around quarterback in school history. He holds numerous school, conference and national records, not to mention countless honors and awards, including the 2008 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and the 2009 Maxwell Award. Following his stellar collegiate career, McCoy was selected by Cleveland in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft, and threw 14 touchdown passes for the Browns in 2011.
Shipley played for the Longhorns from 2004-09. He also set the school record in career receptions (248) and ranked second in yards (3,191) and touchdowns (33). In 2008, he set the school record for most receptions in a game with 15 against Oklahoma State. In his time at UT, he posted nine career games with 10 or more receptions. He was a two-time All-American and Bilentnikoff Award Finalist (2009). The Temple, Texas native was drafted 84th overall in the 2010 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals
In addition to McCoy's first pitch, Ray Benson will perform the National Anthem prior to the contest. Benson is the front man for Asleep at the Wheel, the Grammy Award-winning western swing band whose hits include "The Letter That Johnny Walker Read" and "House of Blue Lights".
The first 5,000 fans to enter the stadium will receive magnetic schedules presented by Budweiser, and following the game, fans can stay and enjoy the first Bud Light Friday Fireworks show of the season.
