ROUND ROCK, Tex. - BOX SCORE

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Express struck first in the bottom of the second as C Cooper Johnson recorded his first home run at the Triple-A level in his first at-bat at Dell Diamond. RF Kellen Strahm was aboard after drawing a leadoff walk. Round Rock led 2-0 after the Johnson homer. SS Jonathan Ornelas doubled then 3B Alex De Goti drove him in with a single to left. The Express led 3-0 after two.

Oklahoma City responded with six runs on six hits in the top of the third. A leadoff walk and a double set up DH Dalton Rushing’s three-run homer to tie it up. Two pitches later, RF Ryan Ward launched a go-ahead home run to centerfield. 1B Michael Chavis and C Hunter Feduccia got on with a single and a double, respectively. CF Esteury Ruiz sent the two around on a double and the Comets led 6-3.

In the bottom half of the inning, Round Rock DH Justin Foscue hit his sixth home run of the season cutting the deficit to 6-4.

The Comets extended their lead with a pair of runs in the fourth. Oklahoma City loaded the bases and LF Nick Senzel sent a single into right, scoring Rushing. 3B Kody Hoese then grounded into a force out but Ward came home, extending the Comets’ advantage to 8-4.

Express 1B Blaine Crim belted the 50th home run of his career with the Express in the bottom of the ninth but the Comets closed the door with an 8-5 win in the series opener. Round Rock recorded just three hits in the final six innings, two of which came in the bottom of the ninth.
