Express Sting Bees in Series Opener on Tuesday

The Bees stung first with a run in the bottom of the second. RF Chad Stevens drew a leadoff walk and SS David Mershon singled. LF Korey Holland drove Stevens in on his base hit and Salt Lake led 1-0 after two.
In the fourth, Stevens got it started again with a leadoff single. He stole second then moved to third on C Sebastián Rivero’s single. Salt Lake scratched another run across as 3B Yolmer Sánchez hit a sacrifice fly to right and Stevens scored the second run for a 2-0 lead.
Round Rock stole the lead on a pair of home runs in the top of the seventh. SS Michael Helman belted his second homer for the E-Train and 3B Cody Freeman hit a two-run shot to take a 3-2 lead.
Salt Lake CF Kyren Paris responded with a two-out homer in the bottom of the inning to tie it up at 3-3.
The Express put two on in the eighth with a DH Trevor Hauver walk and RF Kellen Strahm single. LF Billy McKinney poked a single into left and Hauver scored the go-ahead run. C Cooper Johnson then grounded out but Strahm came home for a 5-3 E-Train advantage.
In the ninth, Express 1B Blaine Crim added an insurance run with a single that sent 2B Alan Trejo around after his leadoff double. Round Rock RHP Joe Barlow retired the side in the final frame giving the Express a 1-0 series lead in the 6-3 win.
E-TRAIN EXCERPTS:
MAKE THEM EARN IT: The Express pitching staff surrendered just two walks and struck out eight batters in Tuesday’s win. It marks the 12th time this season and third time in their past five games they have allowed two walks or less.
FREEMAN ON FIRE: 3B Cody Freeman recorded his sixth consecutive game with at least two hits after going 2-for-4 with a double and a homer in Tuesday’s opener. Freeman is batting .450 (18-40) with four doubles, two homers, 13 RBI, eight runs scored, four walks and four strikeouts in his current nine game on-base streak.
BARLOW BACK HOME: In his home state of Utah, RHP Joe Barlow earned his second save of the season after retiring the side in the ninth inning. It’s Barlow’s second consecutive outing without surrendering a walk or a run.
