TACOMA, Wash. – A three-run sixth inning by the Sacramento River Cats broke open a 1-1 tie on Tuesday, using four extra-base hits in the frame to eventually take down the Tacoma Rainiers by a 4-2 final.
Jumping out in front first was the Rainiers (11-23), as they turned a Cole Young triple into a run on a throwing error from first baseman Jake Lamb. However, the River Cats (17-17) found a way to level in the top of the third when Sergio Alcántara reached with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch, ultimately crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly from Grant McCray.
That 1-1 score held until Sacramento broke things open in the sixth, using the four extra-base hits with three of which coming consecutively. With one out Daniel Johnson hit a triple into right field, his second of the season after also hitting one in his Sacramento debut on May 2.
Johnson then scored in the following at-bat when the newest River Cat Devin Mann doubled into left field, his only hit in the contest. Mann followed suit and traded places in the next plate appearance when Lamb doubled through the hole in the left side, with Lamb scoring on the final two-bagger of the inning that came from Hunter Bishop with two outs.
Sacramento starter Carson Ragsdale tossed just 3.2 innings, though he did not allow an earned run while yielding only one hit with four strikeouts. Picking up the win was Juan Mercedes (1-0) who was just activated from the development list earlier in the day, working three clean innings and allowing just one hit and walk with a punchout.
On for the final two frames was Tristan Beck (S, 1), who earned his first Triple-A save despite yielding a run on three hits. His only other saves came at the major league level with the San Francisco Giants, both of which happened during the 2023 season.
All seven River Cats hits came from different bats, five of which were for extra bases with doubles from Mann, Lamb, Bishop and Alcántara. Also picking up hits in the game were Marco Luciano who was 1-for-4, while Logan Porter closed 1-for-3.
Game two of the series gets underway at 6:05 p.m. (PT) on Wednesday from Cheney Stadium.
