Sacramento dropped Tuesday’s game, 5-13, after having an initial 5-3 lead in the fifth inning, dropping their second consecutive season opener. Starter Seth Lonsway threw three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit but fanning no batters. Trent Harris and Nick Zwack allowed a combined 10 runs in the seventh and eighth innings…13 hits and 13 runs were both the most allowed by the River Cats pitching staff so far this season.
Buddy Kennedy continued to shine as a River Cat, reaching base safely in all five plate appearances, going 4-for-4 with an RBI double and a walk. It was his first four-plus-hit game since July 23, 2024, with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. Sac committed four errors, something that occurred just twice in 2025. The team has had four-or-more errors 35 times in their history, never committing more than five in a game. River Cats pitchers struck out just two batters for the first time since June 28, 2022, at Reno. Sacramento has fanned two-or-less batters in a game 63 times in team history.
The Cats brought it back on Wednesday, winning 10-5. The game was completed early due to inclement weather, stopping at the bottom of the ninth with a runner on first and no outs. This marked their first double-digit victory of the season. Six runs scored in the fourth inning was their most single-inning runs scored so far this season. John Michael Bertrand was the starter but did not factor into the victory, pitching 4.0 innings and allowing two runs (1 earned) on six hits, with two walks and four strikeouts. Six hits were the most allowed by a River Cats pitcher so far this season. All nine River Cats reached base safely, and eight of nine recorded a hit, as well as five Cats having multi-hit games. Grant McCray became the first Cat to record a multi-extra-base-hit game, as well as a multi-RBI game, with 3 RBIs on the evening.
Thomas Gavello recorded the team’s first knock of the season, an oppo taco solo shot to leftfield in the seventh. Sacramento was the last team at the Triple-A level to record a home run, as the Rochester Red Wings scored back-to-back knocks in the fifth inning that same night.
April 2nd’s originally scheduled game was postponed due to inclement weather and unplayable field conditions.
Carson Whisenhunt started on Friday but did not factor into the decision of Sacramento’s defeat…he allowed one run on three hits, with two walks and eight strikeouts. Eight punches were his most since May 13, 2025 vs. Salt Lake when he fanned nine. Braxton Roxby took the loss after allowing four runs on zero hits on 0.1 innings. Roxby gave up back-to-back bases-loaded walks, the second and third instance of this in his career, the first being on August 25, 2021, with the High-A Dayton Dragons. He was then replaced by Gregory Santos and earned two retroactive runs. The Cats fell short of a comeback, scoring just three runs in the eighth and falling 5-6. Osleivis Basabe made his season debut after starting on the 7-day IL. He went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. River Cats pitches allowed nine walks, their most in a game so far this season.
Saturday, the teams played a doubleheader to make up for Thursday’s missed game. It was Sacramento’s first twin bill since March 31, 2024 vs. Salt Lake. They were dealt a walkoff loss, 4-5, in 7.0 innings in Game 1. Trevor McDonald made his first start of the season, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, with two walks and one strikeout. He did not factor into the decision of their defeat. All four of Sacramento’s losses so far this season have come after initially having the lead early in the game.
The River Cats won Game 2, 7-1. Carson Seymour started on the mound but also did not factor into the decision. He threw 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing two walks and fanning two batters. Wilkin Ramos earned his first win of the season, throwing 2.0 innings. Four Sacramento batters had a multi-hit game.
The Kitties managed to pull out a tie as they won the series finale, 9-5, on Sunday. Seth Lonsway was the starter but did not factor into the decision. He allowed two runs on five hits, including a solo shot homer to Trey Mancini, with two walks and one strikeout in four innings. Will Bednar earned the victory in his first appearance this season, after being reinstated from the Development List on April 2. He threw one inning with one walk and three strikeouts. The Cats were struck out 13 times, the most in a game so far this season.
Victor Bericoto went 3-for-5 and launched his first home run of the season and second at the Triple-A level, a two-out, three-run shot in the first inning. It was his 13th homer recorded in the first inning, and first since September 7, 2024, with the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Will Brennan also had his first knock of the season, a three-run homer in the ninth. This marked the fourth home run hit in the ninth inning in his career.
Sacramento currently ranks tied for last in home runs in the Pacific Coast League, alongside the Albuquerque Isotopes. Every other PCL team owns at least six home runs.
