Syracuse, NY – A big first inning from the Toledo Mud Hens proved too much to overcome, as the Syracuse Mets fell, 5-1, on Tuesday afternoon.
Toledo (1-3) wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first inning. After a pair of walks and an error loaded the bases, Trei Cruz delivered a two-run single to put the Mud Hens in front, 2-0. Later in the frame, Max Anderson knocked in a run with an infield single, and Corey Julks brought another home on a groundout. Gage Workman capped off the inning with an RBI double, stretching the lead to 5-0.
Syracuse (2-2) was held in check early but broke through in the fourth inning when Ronny Mauricio hit a solo home run to right-center field, putting the Mets on the board and cutting the deficit to 5-1.
From there, the Mets offense couldn’t find additional momentum. Toledo’s pitching staff limited Syracuse to just five baserunners on the day.
On the mound, Carl Edwards Jr. got the start and was tagged for five runs in the opening inning, only two of which were earned. The righty finished his outing with three scoreless frames from the second through the fourth. Jordan Geber followed with two and two-thirds scoreless innings in relief, striking out three batters, while Alex Carrillo finished the seventh.
The game entered a rain delay after the top of the seventh inning, and the game was called after a 36 minute rain delay.
Syracuse continues its series with Toledo on Wednesday afternoon. Right-hander Jack Wenninger is slated to start for the Mets with lefty Lael Lockhart scheduled to go for the Mud Hens. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m.
