COLUMBUS – The Toledo Mud Hens drop a rain-shortened game against the Columbus Clippers 7-1 on Sunday evening.
The pitching match-up consisted of the rehabbing Alex Faedo for the Mud Hens and the rising Joey Cantillo for the Clippers.
Parker Meadows and Justyn-Henry Malloy would draw back-to-back walks to open the game and set the Mud Hens up for an offensive threat right away. Nick Maton would hit a RBI single to bring home Meadows, putting the Mud Hens up 1-0. Cantillo would lock in though, striking out Johan Camargo and getting Colt Keith to fly into a double play as Malloy got doubled off to end the inning.
Faedo would begin his outing with a Brayan Rocchio groundout. Daniel Schneemann would continue to torch the Mud Hens in the series, clubbing a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1. Faedo would then induce back-to-back flyouts from Oscar Gonzalez and Zack Collins.
Cantillo would need just ten pitches to get through the Mud Hens in order in the second inning. Donny Sands grounded out, Joe Rizzo flied out and Andrew Knapp struck out for the Mud Hens in the inning.
Faedo would once again get the first out before getting into trouble. Sandy Leon would groundout to open the inning. Then the Clippers would hit three straight singles from Jhonkensy Noel, Micah Pries and Raynel Delgado. Delgado’s single drove in a run, putting Columbus up 2-1. Delgado would swipe second base before Chris Roller would strikeout for the second out, with two runners in scoring position. Rocchio would single and score both Pries and Delgado to extend the Clippers’ lead to 4-1. Rocchio would swipe second base before Schneemann grounded out to end the inning.
Cantillo would knife through the Mud Hens again in the third inning. Cantillo would strikeout Corey Joyce, get Meadows to lineout and strikeout Malloy to burn through the inning.
Faedo would return for the bottom of the third inning. Faedo would strikeout Gonzalez to begin the inning. Collins would knock a one-out single to get the Clippers on the bases for the third straight inning. Faedo would get Leon to popout and Noel to groundout to end the inning and strand Collins.
Cantillo would return for the fourth inning, beginning with back-to-back strikeouts of Maton and Camargo. Keith would draw a two-out walk before Sands grounded out to end the inning.
Faedo would return to begin the fourth inning. Pries would flyout for the first out of the inning. Faedo would then walk Delgado and that would end his outing. Blair Calvo would enter the game for the Mud Hens. A wild pitch would move Delgado to second base before walking Roller to put two runners on with one out. Calvo would get Rocchio to flyout and then Delgado would get caught trying to steal third base to end the inning. That would be the end of the night for both Faedo and Calvo. Faedo pitched 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits (one home run), one walk and two strikeouts. Faedo would take the loss, falling to 0-2. Calvo pitched 0.2 inning, walking one batter.
Cantillo would return for the fifth inning for the Clippers. Rizzo would groundout for the first out. Knapp would single and would later swipe second base to put a runner in scoring position after Joyce flied out for the second out. Meadows would walk to put two runners on with two outs. Cantillo would escape the jam by striking out Malloy to end the inning.
Trey Wingenter would enter the game for the Mud Hens in the bottom of the fifth inning. Wingenter would be greeted with back-to-back singles from Schneemann and Gonzalez followed by a three-run home run from Collins to put the Clippers up 7-1. Wingenter would bounce back by striking out Leon and inducing a groundout from Noel and a flyout from Pries to end the inning and his night. Wingenter would finish with 1.0 inning pitched, allowing three runs on three hits (one home run) with one strikeout.
Cantillo would return in the sixth inning to a drizzle. Maton would hit a leadoff double to try to start a rally for the Hens. The double would chase Cantillo and bring in Cody Morris for the Clippers. However, before Morris could even finish his warm-up pitches, the tarp was pulled and the game was washed away shortly after. Cantillo would pick up the win, improving to 2-1 on the season, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing one run on one hit, four walks and seven strikeouts.
