ERIE, PA – Roansy Contreras struck out ten over a season-long seven innings on Tuesday night, but the Curve dropped their series opener at Erie, 4-3.

Altoona led 3-2 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, but SS Ryan Kreidler reached on an error by 3B Josh Bissonette to start the inning. Curve reliever Cristofer Melendez came back to retire the next two batters on just three pitches, but Andre Lipcius roped a double off the wall in left-center to tie the game with two outs. After an intentional walk and an infield single loaded the bases, Josh Lester dropped a base hit in the right field corner to earn a walk-off win for Erie.

The Curve got a brilliant start from Contreras. Contreras allowed two hits, a single to Dillon Dingler in the second and a solo home run to Josh Lester in the third, one walk and struck out ten on just 85 pitches over seven innings. It was the third time in seven starts this season that Contreras struck out at least ten batters in an outing. Erie scratched out an unearned run in the fifth inning when the Curve committed an error on two different potential double play balls to end the inning.

Rodolfo Castro led the Curve offense with his seventh homer of the season in the fourth inning, as part of a two-hit day at the plate. Castro added an RBI single in the fifth inning which took a 2-1 lead for the Curve. Mason Martin added a two-hit day with a double in the sixth and a single in the eighth. It was Martin’s single that began the Altoona rally in the eighth inning, capped off by an RBI double from Brendt Citta.

Cam Vieaux delivered a 1-2-3 eighth inning of relief, striking out Riley Greene to finish the frame.

Oneil Cruz extended his on-base streak to 17 straight games with a two out double in the seventh inning. During the streak, he’s batting .369 with a .423 on-base percentage, with four doubles, one triple, six home runs and 17 runs batted in.

The Curve continue their six-game set with the Erie SeaWolves at UPMC Park on Wednesday. RHP Travis MacGregor (1-1, 4.87) will start for Altoona with the SeaWolves sending RHP Elvin Rodriguez (2-0, 2.01) to the mound.
