Alternate Identities

What is an Alternate Identity?

Over the course of the Minor League Baseball season, teams like to shake things up and go a little bit away from the norm. One of the ways that almost every MiLB team is now participating in is an alternate identity. Essentially, every team in the minors will for a couple of games during their season to bring a fresh look onto the field by creating new uniforms for players to wear.

Typically, these identities serve the purpose of connecting the team back to the community in which they play, using fun items, iconic landmarks, or noteworthy events throughout the communities' history. Some teams have one alternate identity while others carry multiple. A common misconception on the announcements of these new looks is that the respective club is going through a rebrand. This is not the case! At it's core, it is an initiative to introduce something fresh and new while keeping the core brand of each organization intact.

From the naturally representative to the utterly ridiculous, Minor League teams across the nation have come up with some of the most unique brands in sports to offer a new and engaging way for fans to get excited about watching their favorite teams play.

Amarillo Calf Fries

About the Calf Fries

The Amarillo Calf Fries debuted in 2023, becoming the first non-COPA related alternate identity in the club's history. Calf Fries are a well known delicacy in the West Texas region, making it a recognizable brand that fans locally and nationwide could get behind. The playful nature of the identity was one that was engaging, memorable, and celebratory of the traditional west in a spirited and fun way.

The successful launch of the brand in 2023 earned recognition as Minor League Baseball's best alternate identity that year. The burnt orange and light blue was a hit among fans as the merchandise rolled out the door in record speed. In collaboration with Brandiose, the creation of the Calf Fries logo was recognized as one of the best in 2023 and is still catching the eyes of fans everywhere to this day.

In order to celebrate the unveiling of the new threads, fans at the Sunday, June 4 game in 2023 took home a Calf Fries replica jersey. The alternate uniform was worn six time in 2023 and has been worn six times a year in each of the following seasons.

Yellow City Pigweeds

About the Pigweeds

The Yellow City Pigweeds debuted in 2025, introducing the club's second non-COPA alternate identity. The baby blue threads were worn six times over the course of the 2025 season and featured a rare color combination not seen very often in professional sports. In addition to a baby blue jersey with yellow script across the chest, the Pigweeds uniform is complemented by baby blue pants.

Amarillo is also know as the Yellow City, referring to the region's landscape and the Spanish translation of the word. The pigweed plant, a distinctive species commonly found in the Texas Panhandle, pays homage to Amarillo's environmental richness and resilient, ever-evolving nature.

The Sod Poodles' collaboration with Brandiose helped bring the brand to life, with the on-field cap and other Pigweeds merchandise being featured on SportsCenter's Promotion of the Week late last summer.

Pointy Boots de Amarillo

About the Pointy Boots

A celebration of fun, self-expression, and creativity, "Pointy Boots" which originated in North-Central Mexico and made their way into Texas, rose in popularity with the progression of tribal-guarachero music. The moniker honors both Amarillo's young and active hispanic population and the community's centuries-old rich heritage.

"Copa de la Diversión™" or "Fun Cup™" is a season-long event series specifically designed to embrace the culture and values that resonate most with Minor League Baseball™ teams' local U.S. Hispanic communities.

Introduced in 2021, fans can see the Pointy Boots in action every Tuesday home game throughout the season as the team dons bright, multicolored jerseys and hats that were updated prior to the 2025 season.
