Dominant Pitching Leads Jackets to Early Win Over Pelicans

Staff Strikes Out Thirteen as Augusta Takes Opener 4-1

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: The Augusta GreenJackets limited Myrtle Beach’s offense to just three hits in nine innings, as Augusta took the series opener from the Pelicans by a score of 4-1.

Neither offense had much to say early, as the 11:05 start time had hitters on both teams a bit sleepy in the box. Starters Luke Sinnard and Hayden Frank cruised through the first three innings, trading zeroes on both sides.

Both squads got on the board in the 4th, starting with the Pelicans, as Leonel Espinoza shot a fly ball into the jet stream, and the substantial winds at SRP Park carried it up and over the wall for a solo homer. Augusta answered immediately as John Gil took matters into his own hands, working a walk, stealing two bases, and sprinting home to tie the game ahead of a throw from shortstop.

Once the game was turned over to the bullpens, it was the GreenJackets who held the advantage. Albert Rivas succeeded Sinnard, and Rivas retired all 7 men he faced en route to his first win of the season.

The Pelicans selected Cole Reynolds from their pen, and Reynolds struggled in his 3rd professional outing. The righty allowed three hits and three walks in two innings, enabling Augusta to scratch across three runs that would prove the difference in the ball game. RBIs from Eric Hartman and Isaiah Drake gave the GreenJackets the lead, while Gil’s run-scoring double would ice the contest for good.

Myrtle Beach went out with a whimper, mustering just one hit in their final five innings at bat. Jacob Gomez worked the final three frames of the day, keeping the run of zeroes intact and picking up his first professional save as a result.

With a bit more time to rest after today’s early start, the GreenJackets will go for back-to-back home wins to start the series tomorrow evening. Riley Frey will make his first appearance in a GreenJacket uniform since last May, while Eric Frisch takes the ball for the Pelicans after a rough pro debut last week.
