Jackets drop first, steal second game of doubleheader

Jackets score two late runs to win second game

Myrtle Beach, SC – After falling in the first game of the doubleheader, the Augusta GreenJackets were down to their last strike in the second game. Stephen Paolini walked with the bases loaded to tie the score. Then, in extra innings, Landon Stephens doubled to give the Jackets a 2-1 advantage.

Justin Yeager slammed the door in the bottom of the 8th inning for the win.

GAME 1: A three-run 1st inning for Myrtle Beach was plenty to walk away with a 5-1 victory in the first game of the twin bill. A single from Yohendrick Pinango plated one, then it was Jonathan Sierra with a single to bring home two more.

All three runs were unearned from GreenJackets starting pitcher Chad Bryant Jr. He’d get the loss going just one inning.

In the 3rd, Sierra drove in a pair with a single into center field to extend the lead to 5-0. Manuel Espinoza cruised through five innings, allowing just one run on a Braulio Vasquez single in the 4th.

Augusta out hit Myrtle Beach 7-4. Vasquez and Willie Carter each had two hits.

GAME 2: Neither team could get on the board in the first four innings. Myrtle Beach changed that in the 5th. The Pelicans scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch from Ben Dum. Luis Verdugo came home to make it 1-0.

In the 7th, Javier Valdes singled to start the inning. The Jackets loaded the bases, and Paolini, in a 3-2 count with two outs, walked to tie the game at one.

In the 8th inning, with two outs and Cam Shepherd on second, Stephens worked the count full before doubling home Shepherd.

Yeager earned his second win of the 2021 season by retiring all six batters he faced. The right-hander finished with four strikeouts.

NOTES:

· Willie Carter has reached base in all nine games he’s played in.

· Javier Valdes is now 7-18 (.389) and has a six-game hitting streak.

· Joey Estes went 4.1 innings, allowing just one run in game two today. His ERA sits at 2.57 after two starts.
