RiverDogs Bats Go Off on GreenJackets in Opener

Charleston Cruise to Game One Win

CHARLESTON, SC: The opener between the Augusta GreenJackets (20-14) and Charleston Riverdogs (22-12) did not go in the way of Augusta as the Charleston Bats jumped on the GreenJackets early en route to a 14-6 victory for the home team.

The Riverdogs produced three runs on four hits in the first inning against starter Jorge Bautista with RBIs coming from Dru Baker, Bobby Seymour, and Willy Vasquez to make it 3-0 after one.

In the second, six more runs would score to quickly elevate the lead to 9-0 as ten batters came to the plate for Charleston.

Augusta worked their way back into the game in the third inning with two runs scoring on a sacrifice fly by Cal Conly, scoring Caleb Durbin. Another would score off the bat of Stephen Paolini to make it a 9-2 deficit. The Riverdogs would get one of those runs back in the bottom half of the frame to make it 10-2 after three.

Two more would come across to score in the fifth for Charleston to take the lead into double-figures at 12-2.

The GreenJackets would then counter with their best inning of the night by scoring three times in the sixth with two of them coming in on a two-run triple by Brandol Mezquita, making it 12-4. Mezquita would then trot in on a wild pitch to pull Augusta within seven at 12-5.

That's as close as the GreenJackets would get as Charleston produced a pair of runs in the bottom half of the sixth to extend the lead back to nine at 14-5.

One more run would score for Augusta in the ninth as Stephen Paolini scored Brandon Parker with his third hit of the night to conclude the night as the GreenJackets would fall 14-6 in the opener.

Both starters factored into the decision as Ben Peoples earned the win for Charleston, with Jorge Bautista taking the loss for Augusta.

Brandol Mezquita extended his on-base streak to 25 games by reaching twice and Stephen Paolini produced his first three-hit night for the GreenJackets to highlight Tuesday's top offensive performers.

The GreenJackets will look to quickly put Tuesday's defeat behind them on Wednesday with Jordano Perez on the mound versus JJ Goss for the Riverdogs in Game 2. First Pitch from Joseph P. Riley Jr. Ballpark in Charleston is set for 7:05 pm.
