Jackets Fall in Ten for Second Straight Night Thanks to Season High in Errors

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: A nightmarish bout of déjà vu has hit the GreenJackets, as for the second straight night the home team was its own worst enemy across ten innings, falling 5-4 for their second consecutive extra inning loss against Fayetteville.

After a 1-15 showing with runners in scoring position last night, the GreenJackets were 2-13 in similar situations this evening, and combined that struggle with a season-high six errors on defense to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Both teams scored multiple runs in the first, which would prove to be the only of the first nine innings in which a run came across for Augusta. The Woodpeckers tagged Luis Arestigueta for three hits and two runs in the top half, aided by a throwing error from the catcher. The Jackets responded by having four straight men reach on two hits, a walk, and a double against Alonzo Tredwell to take a 3-2 advantage. Tredwell would follow with three straight strikeouts, and that would be enough to silence the Jackets’ bats for the remainder of regulation.

The ballgame became a pitchers’ duel after the first, as Arestigueta grinded through a pair of long follow-ups before being lifted after three. Albert Rivas was the first man out of the pen, and shouldered a heavy burden as his defense sagged behind him. During Rivas’ three innings, the Jackets committed four errors in the field. While Rivas struck out a career-high seven in an attempt to do it himself, an error from Owen Carey in the 5th put Justin Trimble at 3rd and enabled him to tie the game on an RBI single from Jancel Villarroel.

After Tredwell’s tough start, the big righty would settle in and post 4.2 total innings without another run allowed. He departed in the 5th with two outs and a man at second, and Francisco Frias retired Mason Guerra on a liner to the fence to hold Augusta off the board. Frias gave way to Leomar Rosario, whose first relief appearance as a Woodpecker totaled three scoreless innings to hamstring Augusta’s attempts to take the lead.

Neither side was able to score down the stretch, as Trent Buchanan and David Rodriguez combined for zeroes in the final three innings for Augusta, and Ryan Smith held the Jackets hitless in the 9th to send the game to the extras for the second straight night. Just as they did yesterday, Fayetteville found ways to put the ball where the defense wasn’t and take the lead. Cesar Hernandez chipped a Rodriguez changeup into shallow left to score the automatic runner, and advanced to 2nd on a throwing error from Douglas Glod. Alberto Hernandez provided a backbreaking bit of insurance, punching a two-out double over the first baseman’s head for a 5-3 lead.

Augusta’s aggression would prove their undoing against Smith in the 10th, as Isaiah Drake led off the frame by getting ahead 3-0 and watching Owen Carey take third, before expanding the zone for his second strikeout of the night. Carey would come home on a Colby Jones sac fly, but Douglas Glod struck out looking to end the night with an unfulfilled comeback bid.

The GreenJackets’ division lead has fallen to a single game, with the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers creeping up in the rearview mirror. Augusta is in dire need of a victory tomorrow, and sends Owen Hackman to the mound to keep Fayetteville quiet on an SRP Park Thirsty Thursday.
