Thunder Run into Buzzsaw, Carpenter with CG Win

August 31, 2015

Joey Wong's two-run double in the top of the fourth inning put the Rock Cats in front and they went on to defeat the Thunder 4-1 on Monday night at ARM & HAMMER Park.

With the loss and a defeat by the Binghamton Mets, the Thunder remain 4.0 games back of the B-Mets for the second playoff spot in the East division.

The Thunder saw their first three batters reach in the bottom of the first against Ryan Carpenter. Jake Cave led off with a double then Tyler Wade dropped a single into shallow left to put runners on the corners. Rob Segedin was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, however, Carpenter got Tyler Austin to ground into a double play and Tony Renda to fly out to hold the Thunder to just a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, rehabbing Rockies 1B Justin Morneau (2-for-4) reached on an infield single and after a strike out, Will Swanner walked and Wong doubled both of them in for a 2-1 Rock Cats lead.

The two runs was all the support that the Rock Cats starter needed on Monday night. Carpenter jumped into the league lead in innings pitched with 165.1 as he fired a five-hit complete game. Carpenter retired 14 straight batters at one point in his outing, did not walk a batter and stuck out five on his way to his second complete game this season.

New Britain added to their lead in the sixth when Caleb Smith walked back-to-back batters to load the bases. After a pitching change, Juan Ciriaco lifted a fly ball to center for a 3-1 lead. In the eighth inning, the Rock Cats added a second insurance run when Jose Rosario dropped what would've been the final out of the eighth inning to allow Will Swanner to score the fourth run.

Francisco Arcia led the Thunder offense with a two-hit night and Rob Segedin saw his six-game hit streak come to a close on Monday night.
