Vientos Extends Hit Streak in Thursday Night Loss

COLUMBIA, SC - Columbia third baseman Mark Vientos extended his hitting streak in Thursday night's 4-1 loss against Greenville. Vientos' streak now stands at nine games, a team-high for Fireflies players in 2019.
The base hit came in the fourth inning with Columbia (18-29) trailing the Drive (19-27), 3-1. Vientos was also responsible for the run scored by the Fireflies earlier in the game, a sacrifice fly that scored Ronny Mauricio in the opening frame.
An additional offensive standout for Columbia during the evening was Shervyen Newton , who recorded a pair of singles in four at-bats. It was the second baseman's second multi-hit game of 2019.
Many of the Fireflies bats were silenced by Greenville starter Brayan Bello (W, 2-3). The Dominican Republic native pitched 5.1 innings, and struck out eight Columbia hitters. Jose Butto (L, 0-6) pitched the first four frames for Columbia, allowing three runs on four hits, while striking out two.
Fireflies lefty reliever Jake Simon delivered a scoreless relief outing on the mound. In his first appearance for the Fireflies in 2019, Simon went two innings, allowing no hits and striking out three.

The series finale will take place against Greenville on Friday at 7:05 ET at Segra Park. Right-hander Willy Taveras (2-5, 4.47) is expected to get the starting nod for the Fireflies, and will most likely face RHP Alex Scherff (0-3, 4.58).
