CHARLESTON, WV - Power was the name of the game for the Delmarva Shorebirds at the plate and on the hill in a 6-3 win over the West Virginia Power on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park.
Luis Perez (2-1) spun another gem for the Shorebirds (15-9, 50-41), scattering four hits across six scoreless innings while walking one and striking out six. Domingo Robles (7-6) endured the loss for the Power (12-11, 49-40), surrendering five runs on 10 hits in 6.1 frames.
After a quiet start, the Shorebirds got things going at the plate in the fourth. Ryan Ripken beat out a one-out single to extend his hitting streak to eight games, and Will Robertson pulled one into left for a single of his own. After a flyout, Max Hogan dropped a liner into right for a base hit, allowing Ripken to race around to score and put Delmarva up 1-0.
In the fifth, Mason McCoy led off with a single and advance to second after a botched pickoff attempt. Two batters later, Zach Jarrett mashed a towering shot to left that nearly landed on the rooftop patio of the restaurant building across Smith Street. Jarrett's 12th home run of the season boosted the lead to 3-0.
Perez retired nine in a row after plunking the first batter of the game. West Virginia's first good chance came in the fourth when a hit-and-run put men on the corners with one out, but Perez enduced a popup from Rodolfo Castro and overwhelmed Raul Hernandez on three strikes. In the fifth, the Power put the first two men on before Perez retired three in a row on weak contact.
Cadyn Grenier singled with one out in the seventh to set up Jarrett, who again clubbed a no-doubter just left of center field for his second home run of the game and 13th of the season, making it 5-0 Shorebirds.
Kyle Watson belted a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to get West Virginia on the board. In the eighth, Ben Bengtson drew a one-out walk, stole second base, and scored two batters later on Hernandez's single, cutting the Shorebird lead to 5-2.
McCoy tacked on an insurance run in the ninth with a solo home run to left. The Power responded on a Jesse Medrano double and Lolo Sanchez single but would get no closer as Cameron Ming struck out Calvin Mitchell and Oneil Cruz to bring it home.
Jarrett finished 2-for-5 with the pair of home runs and four RBIs, giving him exactly 100 hits this season to become the third South Atlantic Leaguer this season to hit the century mark. McCoy finished 2-for-5 with a homer and two runs scored, while Will Robertson punched in his second straight three-hit game with two singles and a double.
Medrano went 2-for-4 with a double and run for the Power's only multi-hit game on the afternoon.
The Shorebirds get back to work against the Power on Monday night. Delmarva's DL Hall (1-5, 2.45) takes a 15.2-inning scoreless streak into the matchup against West Virginia's Max Kranick (1-4, 4.14). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., and pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 6:50 with Will DeBoer on the call.
