NORFOLK, Virginia – A two-run fielding error by first baseman Ryan Noda – one of five for Norfolk in the game – was the decisive play of a three-run 10th inning on Saturday night as the Gwinnett Stripers (22-22, 60-58) defeated the Tides (14-28, 42-75) 9-6 at Harbor Park. Gwinnett trails the series 3-2 going into Sunday’s finale.

Decisive Plays: The Stripers built a 6-2 lead midway through the fifth inning on a solo homer by Brewer Hicklen (18), RBI singles by Luke Williams and Cal Conley, and an RBI fielder’s choice by Carlos Santana. Norfolk tied it at 6-6 in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double by Rece Hinds, RBI single by Creed Willems, and two-run single by Payton Eeles. The game stayed tied at 6-6 until the top of the 10th, when a two-run error on Noda off a ground ball by Brett Wisely and RBI single by Jose Azocar gave the Stripers a 9-6 lead. Ian Hamilton (S, 8) struck out one in a perfect bottom of the 10th to finish the game.

Key Contributors: Azocar (2-for-4, run, RBI), Conley (2-for-4, run, RBI, steal), Hicklen (1-for-4, homer, 3 runs, RBI, steal), Santana (1-for-4, run, RBI), and Williams (1-for-4, RBI, steal) all drove in runs for the Stripers. Joel Payamps (W, 6-2) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to earn the win. For Norfolk, Eeles (2-for-4, 2 RBIs) and Willems (2-for-4, 2 RBIs) both had multi-RBI games and Enrique Bradfield Jr. went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs.

Noteworthy: All five games of the series have been determined in the last at-bat, with three going into extra innings (Gwinnett is 2-1 in those games). Patrick Clohisy went 2-for-5 for his 13th multi-hit game in Triple-A, raising his average to .396. Hicklen’s team-leading 18th homer was his first since July 30 at Durham. Sandy Leon had a game-high three hits for the Stripers (3-for-4), including two doubles.
