"He's learning a valuable lesson about having to throw strike one and when he doesn't he's getting in a lot of traffic and it makes it harder for him to make pitches," Senators manager Matt LeCroy said. "So far he's continued to make the pitches when he's needed to. I was happy he wanted the ball at the end and he made a pitch to get out of (the jam)."
Burrows (5-3) allowed four runs, three earned, across four innings.
The SeaWolves cut the lead to a run in the top of the ninth when
Ward was the only Senator with multiple hits as he finished 2-3 with a double. The win was the Senators' fourth in a row and seventh in their past nine games.
"I really like some thing offensively that we're doing better. We're doing better with getting ourselves a good pitch to hit," LeCroy said. "When you lose a guy like (Juan Soto) it gives guys more opportunities and we talked about that. Hopefully guys will make the most of it and do the little things to help us win. Really happy we were able to win this game."
The Senators and SeaWolves try for their first series sweep of the season on Thursday morning.
