LAKEWOOD, NJ - West Virginia swept a double-header from the BlueClaws on Wednesday night at FirstEnergy Park, winning 3-2 and 2-0 to move into a tie for first place in the South Atlantic League Northern Division.
The wins put the Power at 36-29/66-65 while the BlueClaws fall to 29-36/69-66. Lakewood needs two wins in their final five games to finish the season with a winning record. West Virginia is now tied for first place with Hickory and the teams have five games remaining in the season.
In game one, West Virginia's Eduardo Vera threw a seven-inning complete game to lead the Power to a 3-2 win. Vera (7-7) did not allow a hit until the sixth inning, when the BlueClaws mounted a rally.
Jesus Alastre had the first of four straight BlueClaws hits, including RBI singles by Adam Haseley and Mickey Moniak, but Colby Fitch grounded into a double-play to end the inning.
Power first baseman Albert Baur homered in the first inning off Luis Carrasco (1-3) to put the Power up 2-0. They added a run in the sixth on a solo home run by Henrry Rosario off Tyler Hallead.
Carrasco, who took the loss, gave up two runs in five innings of work.
In game two, the Power got on the board in the second inning. With the bases loaded, Garrett Brown's bunt to the mound was misplayed by Bailey Falter, allowing Henrry Rosario to score the first run of the game.
Falter came out after 5.1 innings, allowing one unearned run with seven strikeouts. In the process, he lowered his season ERA to 2.99 in what was his final appearance of the season.
Meanwhile, Power starter Mike Wallace (5-6) gave up two hits over seven scoreless innings in the complete game shutout to earn his fifth win of the season.
The BlueClaws and Power finish their series on Thursday night at 7:05 pm. RHP Mauricio Llovera (1-4) starts for Lakewood opposite RHP Stephan Meyer (3-0).
