LAKEWOOD, NJ - On May 6th in Columbia, Nick Fanti got 26 of 27 outs in a combined no-hitter with Trevor Bettencourt in a 1-0 win over the Fireflies. On Monday, Fanti had the no-hitter all to himself.
The left-hander from Long Island retired 27 of 28 hitters he faced, walking only Brandon Wagner in the second inning. He retired the last 22 hitters he faced in pitching the sixth no-hitter in BlueClaws history as Lakewood topped Charleston 1-0.
The lone run in the game came on a Henri Lartigue solo home run in the bottom of the second inning, his seventh of the season, but the star of the day was Fanti. The southpaw struck out a career-high 12 hitters and walked just one in improving to 7-2.
Fanti's no-hitter is the second individual nine-inning no-hitter in BlueClaws history. Gavin Floyd, in 2002, threw the other but made an error in a 1-0 loss to Lexington.
The BlueClaws no-hitters: Keith Bucktrot (7 innings, 2001), Gavin Floyd (9 innings, loss, 2002), Carlos Carrasco & Andy Barb (2006), Jeb Stefan, Ramon Ovideo, and Chris Burgess (2013), Nick Fanti and Trevor Bettencourt (2017), Nick Fanti (2017).
Gregori Rivero, who joined the BlueClaws last week, was Fanti's catcher for the no-hitter.
Lakewood (11-13/51-43) won the series finale after dropping the first two games to Charleston (17-7/52-42).
Alex Vargas (0-1) gave up one run - on Lartigue's home run - and took the loss in his South Atlantic League debut.
The BlueClaws head to Rome and open a four-game, three-day series with the Braves on Wednesday night. LHP Bailey Falter (4-5) starts for the BlueClaws.
