BlueClaws LHP Ranger Suárez was named Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April, it was announced by the Phillies on Friday.
Suarez, a 21 year old from Venezuela, gave up 2 earned runs over four April starts covering 22.1 April innings. The two runs he allowed both came in his first inning of the season on April 8th at Kannapolis, meaning he finished April by throwing 21.1 consecutive scoreless innings (including his first May start, his streak reached 24 innings).
The left-hander also had back to back games - April 20 at West Virginia and April 26 at Delmarva, in which he threw seven scoreless innings. He struck out a career-high 10 against West Virginia and nine against Delmarva.
While he was pitcher of the month for April, Suarez got off to a good start in May, allowing two runs, one earned, in 6.2 innings in a Thursday night win at Charleston. So far this season, Suarez is 2-0 in five starts with a 0.93 ERA. He has struck out 37 hitters against seven walks in 29 innings pitched.
Suarez's next scheduled start comes Thursday at FirstEnergy Park against Greenville.
Former BlueClaws Rhys Hoskins (2015) and Scott Kingery (2015) were also honored by the Phillies. Hoskins, playing for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, was Hitter of the Month and Kingery, with Double-A Reading, was Defensive Player of the Month.
