Myrtle Beach (7-13) starter JP Wheat ran into trouble in the opening frame against Kannapolis (11-9) when Jordan Sprinkle led off the game with a single and came around to score on an RBI double by Javier Mogollon.

After the first two batters to face Wheat generated the first run of the contest, the right-handed flamethrower settled in to record career-highs in both innings pitched (5.0) and strikeouts (6). He allowed just one run on two hits while issuing five walks.

The Pelicans threatened in the second and fourth innings, but ultimately stranded runners at the corners in each of the frames.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Christian Olivo led off with a hit-by-pitch and proceeded to come around and score on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.

Brayden Spears (0-2) provided a scoreless sixth inning for the Birds before surrendering a two-out solo homer to Nathan Archer that capped off the scoring for both teams.

Trailing 2-1, Brayden Risedorph took over in the eighth frame and went on to retire all six batters that he faced on his way to a career-best four punchouts in the loss.

Offensively, the Pelicans were outhit by the Cannon Ballers 4-3. Cameron Sisneros paced the offense with a 2-for-4 night featuring a double. The lefty first baseman extended his hitting streak to five games. Christopher Paciolla collected the only other hit for Myrtle Beach.
