Ninth Inning Comeback Earns Series Finale Win for Fightin Phils

(Portland, ME) - A 3-1 deficit in the ninth inning did not stop a late comeback for the Reading Fightin Phils (16-27) that earned them a 5-3 win in their series finale against the Portland Sea Dogs (24-18).

In similar fashion to previous games in the series, the Sea Dogs were on the board first thanks to an RBI single from Blaze Jordan that scored Zach Ehrhard, who doubled earlier then advanced to third on a ground out, making it 1-0, Portland.

The lead extended for Portland in the bottom of the third inning after Zach Ehrhard scored off a wild pitch from Jean Cabrera. Ehrhard originally had reached on a fielding error from Aidan Miller, advanced to second on a single from Allan Castro then made it to third on a balk, which set him up to score and made it 2-0, Sea Dogs.

Zach Ehrhard scored again for the Sea Dogs in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single from Allan Castro. Ehrhard doubled during his time at bat which got him into scoring position. That added one for Portland as the score now read 3-0.

Felix Reyes got the scoring going for Reading in the top of the sixth inning as he hit his fourth home run of the season, and the Fightin Phils chipped away at the Sea Dogs’ lead, 3-1.

Portland held onto the lead until the top of the ninth inning. Pinch hitter Leandro Pinedra doubled and Luis Verdugo followed with a single that scored Pineda. Trent Farquhar singled and Verdugo advanced to second. Robert Moore tripled on a ground ball and scored Verdugo and Farquhar. Moore made it home on the triple thanks to a throwing error from Ahbram Liendo and the Fightin Phils took the lead 5-3.

Travis Kuhn (W, 4-1) wrapped it up for Reading in the bottom of the ninth and secured the win for the Fightin Phils. Christopher Troye (L, 3-1) was dealt his first loss of the season.

The Fightin Phils return to the field on Tuesday at 11 a.m. against the Erie SeaWolves and starting pitchers have yet to be announced. Pregame coverage is underway at 10:45 a.m. on the Reading Fightin Phils Radio Network. A video stream is available via MiLB TV or the Bally Live App.

The Fightin Phils return home from Tuesday, May 27, through Sunday, June 1, against the Erie SeaWolves, Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. Tuesday is an Education Day, presented by Baseballtown Charites and MLB Play Ball. On Wednesday, the first 2,000 kids, 12 and under, receive Hershey Park tickets. Thursday is a Tribute to Disney's Lilo and Stitch and a Tasting Festival on the Deck. Friday night features fireworks, presented by Vertex Mechanical. Saturday night is the first Carpenter MEGA Blast Fireworks show of the season, sponsored by Countryside, and the Fightin Phils will wear Special Toy Story jerseys. The series ends Sunday with a Nick Singleton Hometown Hero Bobblehead for the first 2,000 kids, thanks to Klee Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
