Reno, Nev. – In 1987, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5606, declaring the first National Women in Sports Day, which acknowledges the accomplishments of female athletes and the influence of sports participation for women and girls, along with honoring the progress and advocacy for equality for women in sports.

Thirty-eight years later, the Reno Aces are delighted with the rest of the country in recognizing the Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day on February 7th.

Throughout the organization, the Aces have a talented and exceptional collection of team members that continues to inspire girls and women in and out of sports.

Dora Cantu, Manager of Production and Game Entertainment, shares her wisdom on remaining steadfast despite the unique challenges girls and women may face.

“You’re definitely part of a team,” Cantu said, “you’re never alone.”

Cantu began her illustrious career as the mascot for the Modesto Nuts and has risen to a prominent and vital role at the highest level of the minors.

Kristina Solis is the Director of Ticket Operations for the Aces and relays a similar sentiment.

“The biggest thing I’ve learned is how much of a family this is,” Solis said, “we all work together, and it’s very much a team effort. It’s something that isn’t given easily. It’s important that we all communicate and work really hard together.”

Leah Withrow, Head groundskeeper, lifted Greater Nevada Field to the Sports Field Management Association (SFMA) Professional Baseball Field of the Year in 2022. She said trying is the best way to break into the sports field.

“You never know until you try,” Withrow said, “the answer is always no until you ask. Just take the risk, and I think you’ll really like the reward.”

Currently, the Aces have 13 full-time female staffers entering the 2024 season. The organization strives to recognize and appreciate those individuals’ incredible accomplishments and contributions and is thrilled to do so on National Women and Girls in Sports Day.

The Reno Aces are slated to open the 2024 season on the road in Las Vegas on Friday, March 29th. They will make their home debut at Greater Nevada Field on Tuesday, April 2nd, hosting the Sacramento River Cats, Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, at 2:05 p.m. PDT.

Season memberships for the 2024 campaign are available via RenoAces.com by texting “MEMBER” to 21003 or calling (775) 334-7000.
