Red Wings Use Late Rally to Defeat Knights, 5-2

The Rochester Red Wings (24-19, 69-47) used a multi-run seventh and eighth inning to prevail over the Charlotte Knights (22-21, 64-54), 5-2 on a beautiful Friday night in downtown Rochester. 2B Liover Pegeuro turned in a 1-for-2 performance with a pair of RBI in his Red Wings debut. 3B Trey Lipscomb also logged in a multi-RBI night, while Red Wings pitchers combined to only give up two runs while striking out 14 in the win.

The Red Wings jumped out to a one-run lead in the first after SS Seaver King deposited a 89 MPH cutter on a rope over the yellow line at the top of the left field fence for a solo homer. It marked his third leadoff home run of the season between Rochester and Double-A Harrisburg, and second in August (8/8 at SWB).

Charlotte responded in their half of the third inning. CF Dru Baker singled and then advanced 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt tapped off the bat of 3B Riley Unroe. Then, SS Jason Matthews and DH Mario Camilletti hit back-to-back singles, bringing in a run, knotting the game up at one before Red Wings starter RHP Chandler Champlain induced a ground ball double play ball to get out of the first and third jam.

The Knights gained their first lead of the game in the top of the fourth, courtesy of a solo shot off the bat of 2B Andy Weber, making it 2-1 Charlotte.

3B Trey Lipscomb led off the bottom half of the seventh with a base knock, before CF Sam Petersen grounded one through the right side, putting runners on first and second. DH Cayden Wallace advanced both 90 feet on a groundout before 2B Liover Pegeuro pummeled a ball up the middle for his first hit as a Red Wing, easily scoring Lipscomb from third as well as Peterson, who just got under a tag at the plate, igniting the crowd at ESL Ballpark, making it 3-2 Red Wings after seven innings of play.

The Red Wings broke it open in the bottom half of the eighth. It all started when LF Phillip Glasser reached base on a hit-by-pitch, therefore extending his on-base streak to a team-leading 21 games. Yohandy Morales would then send Charlotte’s right fielder back to the track as he skied a double over his head, setting up second and third for Lipscomb, who promptly barreled one down the left field line, chasing Glasser and Morales home, making it 5-2 Rochester, heading to the top of the ninth.

RHP Gus Varland entered from the bullpen in the top of the ninth and allowed one runner to get to third base, but stranded him, slamming the door shut on the Knights, earning the Red Wings a 5-2 win.

Right-hander Chandler Champlain got the starting nod for the Red Wings under the Friday night lights. The righty worked 6.0 innings, allowing just two runs on six hits, one walk, while striking out five on 75 pitches, good for his seventh quality start of the campaign. RHP Cole Henry came on to relieve Champlain in the top half of the seventh, tossing 1.1 innings, gathering all four of his outs by the way of the strikeout, becoming the first Red Wing to strike out four in one inning at ESL Ballpark. RHP Andry Lara entered the game in the top of the eighth to relieve Cole Henry. The righty faced three batters, striking out one and walking one on 13 pitches. RHP Gus Varland entered the game in the top of the ninth, looking to close the game for the Wings. The righty secured the save, allowing one hit and striking out three on four batters faced.

The Rochester Red Wings Player of the Game today is 3B Trey Lipscomb. The Maryland native had three hits in four at-bats, including a hard-hit double. The slugger also drove in two runs and scored one himself. Lipscomb’s three-hit night extended his impressive hit streak to 11 consecutive games, tied for the second-longest hitting streak by a Red Wing in 2026.

Rochester will play game five of this six-game set tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. Rochester is expected to execute another bullpen game, while Charlotte will send RHP David Sandlin to the bump.
