Sugar Land Takes Series Opener Over Round Rock, 3-2

Early Express Lead Evaporates as Space Cowboys Hang On for Victory

SUGAR LAND, Texas – The Round Rock Express (7-9) fell to the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (11-5) by a final score of 3-2 on Tuesday night at Constellation Field in the series opener of the six-game series.

Round Rock reliever RHP Damian Mendoza (0-1, 0.00) took credit for the loss after allowing one unearned run on three hits and two walks with one strikeout during his 2.1-inning relief appearance. Sugar Land starter RHP Misael Tamarez (2-0, 4.26) got the win and tossed 5.1 innings of two-run baseball on two hits, four walks and one punchout.

Along the Train Tracks:

  • Round Rock got the scoring started in the top of the second after 2B Jax Biggers drew a bases loaded walk to take a 1-0 lead. 3B Jantzen Witte came up next and drove in RF Sandro Fabian via a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-0 Express advantage.
  • Sugar Land took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third as C Cesar Salazar brought home two runs on a double to right-center field. A throwing error on the play allowed a third run to score.
  • The Space Cowboys were threatening in the bottom of the fifth inning but Fabian made an incredible throw from right field to nab CF Joey Loperfido at the plate which kept the Express trailing by only one run.
  • Both bullpens blanked the opposition for the final six innings as Sugar Land took home a 3-2 victory.

E-Train Excerpts:

  • Texas Rangers rehabber 1B Nathaniel Lowe went 0-for-3 and played the first five innings in his E-Train debut.
  • RHP Florencio Serrano and RHP Damian Mendoza each made their Triple-A debuts. Serrano got the start, and went 2.2 innings while allowing two runs on two hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Mendoza came on in relief of Serrano and recorded 2.1 innings with just one unearned run on three hits and two walks. He struck out one.
  • RF Sandro Fabian recorded his fifth outfield assist of the season on Tuesday night which is good for the most outfield assists in the Pacific Coast League.

Next up: Round Rock and Sugar Land continue their six-game series on Wednesday at Constellation Field with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. CT. Express RHP Owen White (0-2, 7.30) is scheduled to start against Space Cowboys RHP AJ Blubaugh (1-0, 0.00).
