Delmarva Slams Lakewood, 9-2

Severino wins in his Shorebirds debut
July 12, 2014

Lakewood, NJ - The Delmarva Shorebirds coasted to victory with a 9-2 final over the Lakewood BlueClaws. After four consecutive one-run games, Delmarva's victory on Friday night was a much needed win free of late-inning drama.

Janser Severino looked sharp in his Shorebirds' debut, but Delmarva still fell behind early. Severino struck out the side in order in the first inning, en route to retiring the first seven batters he faced. Three consecutive base hits in the second inning from Mayorga, Serra and Tocci put Lakewood on the board. An RBI grounder from Andrew Pullin gave the BlueClaws' an early 2-0 lead.

Lakewood starter Ranfi Casimiro rolled through the first four innings before hitting a brick wall in the fifth. Delmarva loaded the bases with one out with a single and two walks. Anthony Caronia lined a two-run single to tie the game. Gregory Lorenzo pushed the Shorebirds in front with an RBI double to left field. Drew Dosch made it back-to-back doubles, and Chance Sisco ripped an RBI single to cap the six-run frame.

Delmarva extended their lead to seven runs as the game morphed into a blowout. The Shorebirds scored three more runs to ease the pressure off their bullpen. Creede Simpson, Austin Wynns and Conor Bierfeldt all added RBI singles in the seventh inning.

Donnie Hart and Jon Keller combined for four scoreless innings of relief to back up Severino's debut. Keller recorded the nine-out save, his fifth of the season. Severino struck out six in his five-inning debut, earning a win. Casimiro dropped to 2-9 with the loss for Lakewood.

The Shorebirds and BlueClaws wrap up the four-game series on Sunday evening. Delmarva goes for the series win with left-hander Mitch Horacek (4-8, 3.25) against right-hander Tyler Viza (3-12, 5.06) for Lakewood. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 pm at FirstEnergy Park.
