Hader's Gem Leads Shorebirds to 6-4 Win

Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (4-1) scored five runs in the first inning and rode the pitching of Josh Hader to a 6-4 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators (3-2) on Monday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.  The Shorebirds are 4-1 to start the season for a second straight year. 

Kannapolis scored the opening run of the night in the top of the first.  Jason Coats drew a two out walk and scored on a Michael Marjama single into left field.

The Shorebirds exploded in the first inning for five runs on five hits to build a 5-1 lead.  Gregory Lorenzo drew a lead off walk.  After stealing second base, he scored on a Christian Walker single through the right side of the infield.  Then, hits by Nik Baylog and Joel Hutter loaded the bases.  Wynston Sawyer walked to give the Shorebirds a 2-1 lead.  Adrian Marin followed with a slow tapper up the third baseline to score Nik Balog.  With the bases still loaded, Anthony Vega drilled a line drive to right field to score two and extend the lead to 5-1.

In the third, the Shorebirds tacked on another run.  Sawyer hit a two out single.  Then, Marin hit a double to deep left-center field to plate Sawyer from first.

Shorebirds starter Josh Hader (1-0) earned the win in his debut outing.  In six innings, he allowed one hit and no runs.  Hader retired the final 16 batters he faced.

Matt Hobgood entered in the seventh inning and tossed two scoreless innings.  He allowed just one hit. 

In the ninth inning, Kannapolis mounted a rally against Shorebirds right-hander Matt Price.  With the bases loaded and two outs, Kale Kiser lined a triple to the right field corner to trim the gap to 6-4.  Then, with a runner at third, Micah Johnson flew out to the warning track in left field to end the game.

Kannapolis starter Jefferson Olacio, who lasted 0.2 innings, was pinned with the loss. 

Shorebirds shortstop Adrian Marin went 3-for-3 with two RBIs.
