Jake Ring Named SAL Postseason All-Star

CLEARWATER, FL - After a breakout season for the ages, Delmarva Shorebirds outfielder Jake Ring has been named to the South Atlantic League Postseason All-Star Team as a utility outfielder, announced by the league office on Tuesady.
The 22-year-old prospect from Ingleside, Ill. is batting .274 on the season with a league-leading 36 doubles, 14 home runs, 65 RBIs, and 17 stolen bases. Ring's 36 doubles on the year are tied for third-most in Delmarva single season history. He also ranks top-three in the league in extra-base hits (54) and total bases (211), and his batting average puts him in the top 20 among qualifying hitters.
Ring has come up big for the Shorebirds all season. He burst out of the gate with a mammoth April, winning the first SAL Player of the Week award on April 17 and earning Orioles Minor League Player of the Month to boot. No slouch in the field either, Ring opened the season on a 76-game errorless streak through July 12. Ring's blazing first half secured him a spot as the Northern Division's starting center fielder in the midseason All-Star Game.
A model of consistency all year, Ring twice put together on-base streaks of at least 14 games. During a nine-game hitting streak in April, he batted .543 with eight doubles, two triples, two home runs, and 14 RBIs. Ring notched a five-hit game and came a triple shy of the cycle on July 23 in Rome; he recorded 10 hits that week as part of a seven-game swing through Augusta and Rome that saw the Shorebirds sweep an extended road trip for the first time in over a decade.
Big moments seemed to find Ring throughout the season. On the first trip of the year, he slashed a game-tying RBI double in the top of the ninth inning of an April 11 contest in Greensboro. On May 16 at Perdue Stadium, Ring belted a walkoff two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, turning a 5-4 loss into a 6-5 win over Greenville. Down to their last at-bat again on August 20 in Lakewood, Ring jolted the offense with a go-ahead two-run homer to propel the Shorebirds to a dramatic 6-5 win.
The Orioles drafted Ring out of the University of Missouri in the 31st round of the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft. His signing scout was Scott Thomas.
The SAL Postseason All-Star Team was voted on by the 14 teams' field managers, coaches, general managers, writers, and broadcasters. Lakewood first baseman Darick Hall took home MVP honors for the 2017 season, while Rome lefthander Joey Wentz won Most Outstanding Pitcher and former Charleston outfielder Estevan Florial earned Most Outstanding MLB Prospect.
