Shorebirds Sweep Intimidators with 9-4 Win

Team goes 5-2 on first road trip of the season

Kannapolis, NC - The Delmarva Shorebirds (9-5) scored eight runs in the fifth inning to defeat the Kannapolis Intimidators (7-7) 9-4 on Wednesday afternoon at CMC-Northeast Stadium.  The Shorebirds went 5-2 on the first road trip including a series sweep of Kannapolis.  The Shorebirds recorded 11 hits, a fifth straight game with at least ten hits.

Kannapolis jumped on Shorebirds starter Juan Guzman in the first inning.  Adam Heisler hit a lead off home run over the right field wall.  Michael Johnson followed with a triple to right-center and scored on a Rangel Ravelo RBI single.
 
Guzman settled down and wound up limiting Kannapolis to three runs over 3.2 innings with seven strikeouts. 
 
The Shorebirds answered in the second.  Wynston Sawyer reached on a one out error by third baseman Tyler Williams. Torsten Boss followed with a lined single to right field to advance Sawyer to third.  Then, Nik Balog hit a single through the right side to pull the Shorebirds within one. 
 
Kannapolis extended the lead to 3-1 in the fourth.
 
In the fifth inning, the Shorebirds exploded for eight runs on six hits to build a 9-3 lead. Wynston Sawyer and Adrian Marin each had two-run hits.  The Shorebirds sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning. 
 
Right-hander Tommy Winegardner, who was added to the roster on Wednesday morning, earned the win over 2.1 innings pitched out of the bullpen. 
 
Matt Hobgood and Kevin Jacob combined to keep Kannapolis scoreless over the final two innings.
 
Tucker Nathans, Nick Balog and Adrian Marin each recorded two hits. 

The Shorebirds return to Arthur W. Perdue Stadium to begin a four-game series on Thursday, April 18 at 7:05pm.
