Charleston Pitching Holds Augusta in Check

Riverdogs Edge GreenJackets in Game Two

CHARLESTON, SC: A pitcher's duel took place at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Ballpark a day after an offensive showcase but the Augusta GreenJackets (20-15) came up on the wrong end of the pitching battle versus the Charleston Riverdogs (23-14) as the home team emerged victorious Wednesday night, 4-2.

Jordano Perez and JJ Goss traded zeroes for the first three innings of the game as the two starting pitchers made offense tough to come by in the first third of the ball game.

In the fourth, the GreenJackets would find their way onto the scoreboard as a wild pitch brought home Stephen Paolini to give Augusta their first lead of the series at 1-0.

But the Charleston bats would roar back in the bottom half as the Riverdogs scored four times all with two outs as Oneill Manzueta brought in the first run with an RBI double. Shane Sasaki continued the run with a double of his own to score two more Riverdogs. And then it was Carson Williams rolling one back up the middle to bring in Sasaki, quickly putting Charleston ahead 4-1.

That score would remain locked in all the way until the ninth inning as the GreenJackets were held quiet by reliever Victor Muñoz for the Riverdogs as he tossed four shutout innings, following up his starter JJ Goss.

Augusta also got nice work out of their bullpen from Rolddy Munoz and Estarlin Rodriguez who each pitched two scoreless innings to get the game to the ninth still 4-1.

With two outs in the inning, Brandol Mezquita singled to keep the game going for Mahki Backstrom who plated home Mezquita on an RBI single to sink the deficit to 4-2 and bring the tying run to the plate. Braulio Vasquez came up as the tying run but Charleston closer Kyle Whitten got Vasquez to ground out as the Riverdogs held on for the 4-2 victory in game two.

Victor Muñoz earned the win for Charleston with Jordano Perez taking the loss for Augusta.

Stephen Paolini and Caleb Durbin each produced multi-hit games for the GreenJackets offensively to pace the club. Augusta out-hit Charleston 7-6 and only struck out just 4 times, but the Riverdogs pitching staff still delivered to take the first two games of the series.

Game three of the series comes from Joseph P. Riley Jr. Ballpark on Thursday night as the GreenJackets look to get back into the series with Landon Leach taking the ball against Antonio Jimenez for the Riverdogs with the start time set for 7:05 pm.
